Here’s Lukie D ”Everlasting Love” on Stingray Records from 2003: Which ones are the SOUL MUSIC acts that have recorded for the largest number of different labels and do they come close to Lukie D?! You may also want to give examples of quality SOUL MUSIC from Jamaica or maybe that should be another thread. Please move if in the wrong place. Best, Mats 4
Happy Feet Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Wow , that's some list , is he still recording? 1
Geeselad Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 I seriously doubt it! That's unbelievable. 1
Mickey Finn Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Nobody is likely to beat Lukie D, although there are perhaps features of the Jamaican scene that make his track record less unlikely - especially if combined with digital download only releases. One soul artist that comes to mind is Donald Height. He released singles between 1960 and 1976 on King, Soozee, Jubilee, Old Town, Roulette, RCA Victor, Shout, Jubilee, Hurdy-Gurdy, Honey, Bell, Mayhew, Dakar and Soulful Music. As Don Day Curtis he recorded for ABC-Paramount. As Prince Jefferies he had a release on Old Town. 15 labels in 16 years. 2
Djmelismo Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 Thanks for the response and reactions! According to Wikipedia Lukie D is still active, but no reports on what he has done after 2019 and I haven't been able to find any new releases.
Mal C Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Maybe not in the same league as Lukie D, but Syl Johnson flipped about from local to major labels an awful lot. 1
Carty Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Ike and Tina Turner spread there selves out a bit label wise , Sue , Kent , Loma , Tangerine , Sonja , Warner Bros , Modern , Philles , Cenco , Blue Thumb , Innis , Pompeii , Minit , A&M, United Artists , and on ........ Again ,Nowhere near the original posts list , Gregory Isaacs , Alton Ellis and Vin Gordon must have all used over a dozen labels each as well . 2 1
Soul Salad Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 WOW some list!!, Aren't Reggae acts known for that as the labels are so tiny (obviously not to that extent), Big hat off to DJMelisimo for even compiling that list- BTW Are you "certain" you haven't missed any out? 1
Rick Scott Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 Here Is Another Gem From Lukie D i Bought back in 2007 on Grand Gallery Record Label (Japan) Works well as it is but i used to pitch it down a little, yes a Great Artist with a Lovely Voice. Thanks for Jogging the Memory Djmelismo 1
Nickinstoke Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 From a UK point of view, a pub conversation raised a similar question about the artist with soul releases on the most UK labels. We came up with 19 labels for Donnie Elbert: Parlophone, Sue, CBS, Polydor, New Wave, Deram, London, Avco, Epic, Mojo, Jay Boy, RCA, Bradley’s, DJM, Klik, All Platinum, Echo, Sugar Hill, Outta Sight. If you include the Joe Boy release that is credited to him, you can get to 20. Does anyone beat Donnie? 3
Djmelismo Posted December 25, 2023 Author Posted December 25, 2023 Thanks all for your contributions! Lukie D is the undisputed champ...lol... Best, Mats 1
