Recommended Posts

hi there everyone, i'm new to the site, and its been a long time since i was on the scene. the early eighties infact, top of the world, stafford or cliffton hall, rotherham was my last all-nighter long, long ago. but having found my records, i've found a new love for northern soul music again. but how things have changed, or have they (maybe i was never that cool anyway). it got me thinking, what would be my favourite top five? now i know my five might not be cool or ''in'' shhh.gif , but their the ones i like tongue.gif , i'm sure the more i get back in to it they may change, but for now these are them.

1.the javells......................goodbye, nothing to say

2.the heartstoppers............marching ut of your life

3.the olympics...................same old thing

4the exciters.....................blowing up my mind

5.tony clarke.....................landslide

now to get me up to speed, whats other peoples favourite five?

Hard one! How can you name five faves?? Actually, if you said you could ONLY take five records to a desert island, and therefore you HAD to pick, I would have to say,

Monique "If you love me (show me)" Maurci

Ruby "Feminine ingenuity" Gold Token

Robert Tanner "Sweet memories" Megatone

Ella Woods "I need your love" Merging

Jean Carter C/U "I want to know" Decca Acetate.

But I really would hate to choose!!

It's not untill you sit down & try that you realise what an impossible task it is !

I've found it hard enough to get down to 20 ! & i've probably missed something out in that.

So here's my all time top 20, the top 3 would probably never change but the others could be in any order.

1. Marie Knight - That's no way to treat a girl

2. Dean Parrish - I'm on my way

3. Epitome of sound - You don't love me

4. Ray Pollard - It's a sad thing

5. Burning Bush - Keeps on burning

6. Jerry Fuller - Double Life

7. Dana Valery - You Don't Know Where You're Interest Lies

8. Dusty Springfield - What's it gonna' be

9. Gene Chandler - I can take care of myself

10. Charles Sheffield - It's your voodoo working

11. Ron Holden - I'll forgive & forget

12. Porgy & the Monarchs - That Girl

13. Falcons - I'm a fool i must love you

14. Sue Lynn - Don't pity me

15.Gladys Knight & the Pips - Stop & get a hold of yourself

16. Ray Scott & the Scotsmen - Love piled on top of love

17. Jimmy Seals - The yesterday of our love

18. Little Ritchie - Just another heartache

19. Johnny Casewell - You don't love me anymore

My top five at this moment (changes quite often) are:

1. Mine Was Real - Rozetta Johnson (Clintone) This record oozes class and every home should have one IMHO.

2. Too Many Memories - The Passions (Unique) Got this on one of the Northern Soul Fever CDs and would love a vinyl copy. Found out on here and KTF recently that it's a cheapie. Gerrin!!!

3. Yes I'm Ready - The Hesitations (GWP) Sweeeeeeeeet version of Barbara Mason, does group soul get any sweeter than this? Featured on recent Kent CD More Perfect Harmony, if you buy CDs and don't have this yet, get it NOW!!!! thumbsup.gif

4. Suffering Soul - Mighty Joe Young (Webcor) List wouldn't be mine without an R&B tune, got this a few years ago from Joe Dunlop. Brilliant tune, sort of Bobby Bland meets Ray Charles.

5. Standing On Guard - The Falcons (Big Wheel) More sweet group soul and I'll probably get hung for this but better than I'm A Fool (I Must Love You) and Has It Happened To You Yet IMHO.

Regards

Gordy

What makes these your top 5's - is it the memories attached to each of the tune do you think? I know if I had to think of 5 tunes they would take me straight back to where I first heard them, or maybe even bought them.

Steve

EASTBOURNE

Yes, that's me all over! I'm transported right back to when and where I first heard them. I can also remember lots of other things connected to people and events just from hearing the records, like a kind of audio diary - apart from all the emotional connotations associated with certain records! It works with almost all of my records in fact!

(I even feel the September chill when I hear Lee David's "Temptation Is Calling My Name" and it transports me right back to 1973!)

Nice choices. The Dee Dee Sharp record on UK Action was one of the first "rare" soul records I ever bought, and I love it to this day. I wouldn't part with it for the world.
