Owd Codger Posted September 4, 2023 Posted September 4, 2023 Hello, hope somebody can help me identify a cover version of The Temptations song "Ain't no sun since you've been gone" ( other versions of this tune include Gladys Knight, the Supremes, Chuck Jackson, Dusty Springfield, etc. This is a male version, group, quite a good stab at it I think. NOT the Dynamics,. Mid tempo item . On the old tape I had, it was given the name "Originals" but clearly isn't the Motown Originals. Thanks for any help
Solution The Yank Posted September 4, 2023 Solution Posted September 4, 2023 There was a version of "Ain't No Sun..." by a group called the Originals (not the Motown group) -
Owd Codger Posted September 4, 2023 Author Posted September 4, 2023 Many thanks The Yank. Interesting....never knew about another "Originals"
Thinksmart Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Linking back to Motown and its labels, Rare Earth also did a version too, that's more southern rock in style.
Owd Codger Posted September 5, 2023 Author Posted September 5, 2023 Re Motown...Norman Whitfield , he re-tooled his songs a lot, spread around various artists. Unusually ,on this song he cut it twice on Gladys Knight..1966 ( Everybody needs love lp) and 1969 ( Nitty Gritty lp)....completely different arrangements. Also, according to DFTMC, Gladys' version was first...before The Temptations in 1967.
Thinksmart Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Same of course as Heard It Through The Grapevine too on Gladys Knight and the Pips too (although I never took to that version much)

Thinksmart Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Listening to the Undisputed Truth version now - quite nice production, a touch slow to get going.
The Yank Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 This Originals is probably one of the "two groups" mentioned in this article (Cashbox November 18, 1967)
Jordirip Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 Not forgetting the version by the Frisco Singers on Chess which is the flip to the incredible 'My Girl's Waitin'. 1
Bunderthollox Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 I've got thr prpfonix versio, I always thought that night be a bit dubious.
George G Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 The Originals http://buckeyebeat.com/originalscle.html

One of the bands may have been By Popular Demand, they are also listed on the Buckeye Beat website. Rick Auerbach had been in the Cellmates with Tampa Lann. They were best known for being high school classmates with Eric Carmen (Raspberries/solo hits), who mentioned them in his autobiography. Gari was the singer for the Other Ones/Players IV "The Two Of Us". That record was one of his productions, recorded with studio musicians.
