I was wondering what forgotten tune people would re-activate and what forgettable tune they would burn.

So for me I would re-activate 'Devil made me do it' by 'The Natural four,.. Ok, hold on a minute. I know that this tune is a bit left field but then I could name many others that are. I remember when this was getting plays at the Casino it would pack the floor,. yes, it really did, in fact it packed the floor everywhere for a while and it provoked some great dancing too. I love this tune, it's a real banger, in my eyes everything that 'Northern Soul' is and I think it should definitely be getting plays again. Go on give it a listen again, you'll see what I mean.

Now my forgettable tune that I think should be burned is 'Can't live this way' by Barnaby Bye'. OH MY WORD! What an absolute load of CRAP this is! I recently read and I quote,' This record is a monster tune',... Monstrous, I think they meant to say. Out of 'Mecca' this has to be one of the all time crappest tunes I've ever heard, it was crap then and it's crap now, what the DJ who first played this out was thinking is anyone's guess. There ain't no soul in these old grooves. This record should definitely by BURNED!

You may not agree with what I write but that's OK you don't have to. What I would like to know is what forgotten tune you would re-activate and what forgettable tune you would gladly burn? I think there's a lot to choose from especially the 'burners' as many of us who were there back in the day when all sorts of rubbish was getting played can testify to. Let me know, love to see what you all come up with.

Am sorry 'Soul Shrews' but none of these two are actually a match IMO to either Barnaby Bye or Wombat disgrace.

There are other more hideous things to be disclosed all over again but who goes into these dark places anymore ?

Yes, very dark places, sometimes it just makes me sweat just thinking of what's in there.

Personally not a fan of Flamma Sherman but probably wouldn't burn it, just yet anyway, but Jerry Naylor💩, what a pile of absolute crap that is. I also wonder why stuff like this is ever played.

What about 'Ain't no soul'  by Ronnie Milsap,.. Who thought it would be a good idea to play this out?

Flippin' can't stand hearing this record, needs to be put into the crematorium. Burn it!

Jerry Naylor - City Lights

A fantastic record,up there with the

big classics and always will be.

A great dance tune which the dancers

love, part of our Northern Soul history.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion,

no way is it shite at all, loved by many

dancers, true Northern Soul at it's best.

are you serious ?   im not entirely sure how or why this kind of garbage is even played at a soul event.    same could be said for a lot of other records too.     He shoulda stayed with the Crickets, after Buddy Holly passed away......

Yes,I'm serious,a fantastic Northern Soul

uptempo dancer,loved by many Soulies.

I noticed that you picked an early live

recording to let everyone listen to it,

not the best choice as the sound quality

isn't always the best.Would have been

better with Brico's upload, which is much

better to highlight this great tune to

everyone.

Also, have a look at the comments

from Soulies about how fantastic

this tune is,there are plenty

of knowledgeable people who love

this track.

It's not garbage,it is brilliant and thank

you for uploading the video, always enjoy

listening to the live or record, either way

a great sound to my ears.

Just because you don't like it,doesn't

mean everyone else is wrong does it,

intelligent Soulies can decide for

themselves.

I have to say people, I'm loving this. It's very interesting to see what you all love and don't, how they feel about tunes and in fact the scene.  Jerry Naylor seems to have thrown up some great opinions. Personally I don't like 'City Lights' however I can see why others do and that's fine. 'Happy Feet mentioned 'Jerry Fuller - Double life', as a reactivation, on that, I can agree, it's a great tune. But let's not all get too serious about this stuff, it's just a bit of fun. Though, sorry 'Goldsoul' ... I still think 'Barnaby Bye' is the biggest pile of crap but I agree with you that 'Life - cat's eyes is right up there too.

Footsee - Wigans chosen Few ,.... When I heard this and then saw it being performed on 'Top of the Pops' I just looked down at my thread bare carpet and wondered 'WHY'.

Gary Lewis into the bin.

Never heard this one B4, at least I don’t think I have… I would not buy it on 45, but I like it, good record…. Gary Lewis deffo in the bin… !

Most if not all these tracks were played long before I started, so the stuff I didn’t like from the slow to mid tempo period, 8ts/9ts includes stuff like Joe Vina, you walked, Roscoe & Barbara / old town, good beat but leap out of the window out of tune!  Caroline Weaver was a £2 record out of a crap box, and when I sold it mid nineties it was still as un whelming as it always was, don’t understand why folks would pay a ton plus for it…

there was some right drible offered in this period, which made some of these not so soulful Wigan 7ts sounds, sound energetic in comparison!!

good thread, keep em comin!

We could argue The Joker, even Frankie Crocker aren't stellar musical productions - but they are all in the weird and wonderful history now.  I don't want to edit Northern Soul, it genuinely covers the sublime to the ridiculous.

I have one of those somewhere, bought as a new release in the 70's, a fine tune indeed, must try and find it.

Billy Arnell isn't a good record to my ears so I'd sell it rather than bin it,

Gary Lewis into the bin.

If you've a copy of billy please thanks

Billy Arnell and the Sparkles????? Sounds like a musical interlude on the likes of the Des O'Conner show.

Re-activate  Brothers, Sisters etc

Burn Gerri Thomas.

But I could gladly live the rest of my life without hearing either.

Well I'm getting the same impression from here... Very mixed feelings about most 'burn'em' and 'reactrivate'em' records or is it already premature dementia mental confusion affecting my ear buds ? :-0

Anyway only re-activate record I'd vote up to now is Jerry Fuller 'double life' which I always loved regardless of anything. It is a white dude doing his best 'soul' effort. Very well achieved in my book :-°

I'll have this from my early days on the scene

And this

I'm struggling to think of any proper crap that was played in the late 80's🤔

I'll give you one,.. 'Tears - Lee Roye'. Controversial I know, I just find this tune weak and soulless. Burn it.

Posted

Another couple I'd love to reactivate.

The Trip - Dave Mitchel and the Screamers, and 'So Is The Sun - World Column'.

Two banging 100mph dancers, though I'd probably slip a disc trying to dance to these now.

Can't agree with you there. I'd love a copy, but different tastes are crucial

Played world column out to a good response, it's not that fast, I'm guessing around 115-120 bpm

Great to know someone's spinning 'World Column', it is a superb tune. Remember first hearing it at Cleethorpes Talk of the North, completely blew me away. Dancing to it need's some energy, it's a true stomper. When it comes to 'Lee Roye' I actually have a copy albeit a re-issue however I never play it.

I'm sure World Column has been getting quite a few plays over the last few years,

As for Dave Mitchell, in the 70's Simon Soussan listed Hank Jacobs "Elijah rocking with soul" for sale so I ordered a copy.

A few weeks later Dave Mitchell's The Trip arrived with a note saying I'm sorry Hank Jacobs had already been sold so I thought you'd want this one. It was just starting to get played at The Mecca.

I'd love to see it reactivated.

I wish I was qualified to comment on the Forgotten - I'm never sure if something I come across that catches my ears is a forgotten played out oldie, something the tape swappers shared, one that got a few spins somewhere but never quite made it or (now and again) a track that's largely unknown..........I would never class any record as rubbish, I've learned that it's all down to your own personal taste and that's what really matters!

However, as for Forgettable I'll be honest and most probably controversial by picking a monster tune I've never liked Lou Pride – I'm Com'un Home In The Morn'un (tin hat on LOL) even though I kinda get why it's an anthem it just doesn't do it for me!

Interesting thread - every day a school day for me :D
