Soulfulsolutions Posted August 30, 2023 Posted August 30, 2023 (edited) Across the board, 60s’, 70’s, modern, girly, blokey, groupy and obscure, so a bit of something for everyone. Happy to provide additional images and sound files. PM any questions or to reserve. Skye – Ain’t no need – Anada 100 Ex- £175 (Mid 70s California release, and a cover of Ralph Graham on Sussex. Some marks on vinyl, 6-7 light pops on exit to run out) Ike (Isaiah) Porter & Fabulations – You ain’t seen nothing yet – Anla 107 Ex £500 (Very rare Lake Charles release on Eddie Shulers label catering for the hybrid east Texas and south Louisiana audience and better known for the Charles Green release. This raw unpolished group soul 45 with a lowrider flip has rarely surfaced, the few copies that have are beaten up. Producers name penned out on both labels) Natural Four – Hanging on to a lie – Boola-Boola 1001 Ex £500 SOLD (What a tune, outstanding crossover dancer that gets better with age, available here on the local Oakland, CA release. Some light marks on the vinyl so Ex visually, but no effect on an Ex+ play. Feint trace of a signature on the top label at 10-11 o’clock) Keni Lewis – What’s her name – Buddah 191 M- £300 (Another crossover winner on a Washington DC release from a talented fella who has remarkably served some time with 2 Shrine label groups no less, the Cautions and Enjoyables, and then the Chancellors on Cap City. Wow what a transition from those 60’s barn stormers to the less frantic 1970 groove) Universal Minds – A chance at love / I betcha’ – Charles 1229 Ex+ £150 SOLD (I think the label is related to Charles Hodges, who recorded on NYs Genuine Records, as did the amazing Mr Soul / Al Scott. All labels point to Mac Avery Music publishing company. 2 cracking sides, ‘A chance’ is strong crossover, and ‘Betcha’ a grower on the low rider scene) 21st Century – Coming right back / Shadow of a memory – DOT 17190 WD Ex £350 SOLD (What a double sider this, always been a firm favourite, classy male vocals a major label release after the local on Noel. Some very light feedback, not cue burn, at the start of both sides but otherwise 2 completely compelling dancers, oozing classy distinctive male vocals) Family of Eve – I want to be loved by you / Please be truthful – Full Sail 751 WD M- £500 (Modern soul combo from Pittsburgh, PA with a reputation for being, apparently, the longest running group in the region. Unusual double sider in that both sides have very strong lead singers, male on “Loved”, female on “Truthful”, what a great mix. Blue vinyl release) Bob & Gene – I really really love you – Mo-Do 104 Ex £1200 SOLD (What’s not nice to like about this Buffalo, NY duo of Bobby Nunn and Eugene Coplin, who started young, taking advantage of Nunn seniors own record label. “Sailboat” on 108 still does it for me, but I gotta say there’s a reason this groups output has filled dance floors in recent years, catchy arrangements, unique vocals, quirky lyrics, low-fi recording, obscure label, all key features of collecting Northern. Vinyl is visually Ex-, but it plays much better, tiny heat damage on edge does not affect play) Willie Kendrick – Change your ways / What’s that on your finger – RCA 9212 WD M- £525 (Double bubble here with 2 fantastic sides from the treasure trove that is the Pied Piper stable, “Change” the uptempo R&B tinged Northern dancer, and the stunningly emotive beat ballad “Finger”, you couldn’t want for 2 better sides and at the opposite end of the spectrum on a single slab of vinyl. A masterpiece on the scene) Ellie Greenwich – Baby – Red Bird 10034 M- £450 SOLD (The collective of Red Bird, Blue Cat, Daisy and Tiger labels were stacked full of Northern gems often influenced by Leiber & Stoller guiding a raft of girl groups and individual female artists to counter Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’, but the suite of labels were also graced by the likes of the Ad-Libs, Sidney Barnes, Charles Brandy and Eddie Jacobs serving up Northern monsters. Here we have the harder and much more attractive yellow stock copy of this in-vogue dreamy femme dancer in lovely Ex+ condition) Specials – I can’t find another – Satch 515 M- £500 (South side Chicago group with 3 known late 60s releases on a label with a numbering system starting oddly at 512, ending at 515 and no apparent 513! Maybe there’s one or more to come from the Specials, who also recorded as the Cassadons on Satch’s subsidiary Beltone, all linked by Fipa or Heno publishing and Johnny Finch on the credits. This copy is nice and clean, with an edge lift that does not affect play) Jimmy (Soul) Clark - Sweet darlin’ - Soul Hawk 001 Ex+ £125 SOLD (Detroit class, never fails to lift a listener. Red label but with SILVER text, minor edge lift does not affect play. Bargain!) Cody Black – I am particular – Wheelsville 107 Ex £300 SOLD (His hardest to come by and therefore least known beyond the bailiwick of Detroit aficionados. This 1966 girly backed track has Hanksy all over it, and more up-tempo than other releases Cody’s so well known for. There’s something appealing about the Wheelsville logo, a cornerstone of Detroit collecting. Top copy with only a couple of light minor marks that’s survived the normal mishandling of the motor city’s over eager record owners) PayPal by friends please or add 4%, or bank transfer. Postage: £4.45 – First Class Signed For (Insured to £50 at buyers risk on this list) £7.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £750) £8.65 – Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £1000) Overseas on Request ATB, Lee Edited August 31, 2023 by Soulfulsolutions
