Divvies

Divvies, Remember that word? I can, "Divvies", well this was the derogatory name for "Jim and Barbara" and for people who "didn't know their stuff" I remember getting on a coach in Hull as a very young spotty faced lad on the way to Wigan Casino. The "Big Boys" were all sat at the back, Paul n Paddy Smith, Martin Sayner, Sean Russlin, Martin Byrd and Rocky. I sat well up front not daring to look back too much. I was with Timmy Peacham (Sadly gone now well before his time RIP) and Mark Robinson, I suppose the complete set of Hull Soul Club was on that coach? We set off from out side The New York pub at the top of Anlaby road and I was shitting my self! I have since stormed machine gun nests and enemy trenches in Iraq and Afghanistan and not been so scared!

The year was probably 1980 although it may well have been 1979? It's all a bit fuzzy now and my memory chooses to do its own thing, I can't remember the trip there much, to be honest I can't realy remember what I heard that night musically, I do remember the flavour of the conversations thought!

Back in nineteen hundred and frozen to death we had, probably the same as kids do now, buzz words that were cool to use. Half the time we didn't know what they meant but adding them into the conversation was thee thing to do. I remember using words like black bombers, ionamine, Tenuate dospan, Filon, I sounded like a fookin chemist yet I couldn't tell you the difference between Aspirin and Dexamphetamine I daren't take anything! It was cool to talk about that stuff as if you were "in". Looking back now I see how scary it all was especially as I now have sons and a daughter of that age!

I remember the biggest buzz was talking records, this was a fookin mine field as every one else seamed to have "oracle" like knowledge of the black disks and I knew fook all! I suspect that most of us were in the same boat back then, don't forget every fooker seams to be an expert now days thanks to CD sleeve notes books and the internet. I must admit to being a little pissed off when I hear a "Nuevo" expert or collector who knows more now than me! Don't they realise how many hours I have spent listening to my cassettes! I couldn't afford the bleedin records back then!

When I look back at the stuff that got me into Northern in the first place the list of tracks that inspired me and became part of me are now almost taboo, we all know and love them yet the likes of "Interplay" and "A Touch Of velvet A sting Of Brass" are now only played by the brave or the stupid.

At what point did these tracks become "Divvies" music? Was it because they were over played at The Casino? Was it because they became the anthems bleeding over to Joe "Divvies" Public and creating the stereo type baggy trousers n bowling shirts? I can understand the hatred towards a misinformed public back in the late seventies and early eighties, but why did we begin to hate the music? Was that music just a casualty of the day; was it an acceptable loss in order to protect the deeper soul? I personally believe that this loss is unacceptable!

"Divvies", are they the ones who dance to "Wigan's Ovation"? Are they? Coz I think that the real "Divvies" are the ones who "Poo Poo" the classics yet freak out to "FRANK POPP ENSEMBLE"!!!!! or the likes of fookin Carbon Copy!!!!!

I dug out some of my old "Youth Club" soul this morning and tried very hard to listen past the cringe factor and hey, Interplay is quite fookin good and A Touch Of velvet A sting Of Brass still moves me to a special place, not a special place where people lick windows, it warms me and it always did!

So how about it, are there any tracks that deserve another chance? Who would play them, what you play and who is brave enough to loose the cool n dance to them?

The cool dudes can only be realy cool if you drop the conceptions; I'm cool as fookin mustard and its you that's the "Divvies"

Love Peace and Lentils, Imber Rocks. Yours ImberBoy :-)

P.S My fave divvies track is "What" Judy Street followed by A Touch Of velvet A sting Of Brass. "Whaaa wha ... wha wha wha wha wha wha........

I still love "Interplay" and what-have-you, but then I'm a sucker for instrumentals. The track that always made me want to charge onto the local disco floor swinging a bicycle chain was "Uptown Festival".

I think it's just that looking back some records aren't that good as Northern Soul records. I love Touch Of Velvet but don't reckon it's a soul record. In the 70s we often only listened to the beat and forgot about the soul side of it. Even in the 60s i loved the super rare Human Beinz and would dance like a maniac to it but it's not very soulful (whereas Mitch Ryder usually is). Interplay and Condition Red ain't that great but Double Cookin and the Cat Walk are.

These days Nobody But Me and Pushin Too hard would get played in the mod psych room not the Northern and Touch Of Velvet in the lounge music sofa room for you to smoke your cigar to.

So my divvy records for revival are You Get Your Kicks and Ten Miles High

Come on Pete, what's your favourite "Divvy" track and when did you last listen to it or dance to it...... in fact we should have a "Divvies amnesty" Pete you should start us off...... :-)

Neither do I. The problem with that one in particular is that it was used by hundreds of mobile DJ's across the land as their theme tune - copying whoever used it on Radio Caroline.

Great idea for a thread. A few years back, a car load of us from Cardiff and Bristol were heading into London - either Dome or 100 Club - one of our number was the small but perfectly formed Mod fella, Mark Thomas who only got into the music big time around 6/7 years ago. The rest of us in the car dated back to early 80s and that. As we were ploughing through the West End, I had the RCA CD comp on the player and we kept playing Peggy March, Beverley Ann and MVPs over and over and singin along - Mark was doing his nut whilst we were revelling in the pop classics of our past.

I'd love to hear Kiki Dee - Magic Carpet out at a big do. Fab memories. Do it someone, do it.

There's a time and place for all tunes that have been played on the scene, it's just picking the moment, when you play them. I still love all those pop tunes that have been played over the years and still play a lot of them out at the various 40th & 50th birthday bashes etc. that I DJ at, and yes the floor bounces, you can't take memories away, even if we are embarrassed now to play them on the current scene.

this is one of the great things about this music. different records mean different things to different people, don't they? it's funny how something inside of us draws the line at certain sounds. I hated all those british things like barry benson & helen shapiro, but most certainly hit the floor to the mystic moods, maybe because it sounded weird, trippy or whatever. some of these TV theme type things, whilst devoid of soul, gave a special atmosphere to a club like the casino, and as others have said, they belong to a time and a place. sometimes it's interesting to play them to remind you of how awful they were and how a complete abdication of sound judgement & good taste hurled you onto the dancefloor. I blame the drugs of course. one I used to really loath was patrick bradley - just one more chance. that record could have me leave an all-nighter if it came on late, such was the depression it caused. pure excrement.

Pete, Mike Ahern used to play that, as did DLT later on Radio 1, "Soul coaxing" and TOVASOB were both on major minor label so guessing these were pushed by Radio Caroline director Philip Solomon who controlled the irish label Major-Minor records at that time.

'A Touch of Velvet' was a great early soothing record. Like the name of the group it is a mood piece and a mosaic of colours. Yes, it isn't a soul record. But neither were a lot of sounds that I remember from the same period. A guess it had a lot to do with the drugs. There were just some sounds that took the edge off the undeniably rough side side of amphetamine and near amphetamine. It brought the rare smoothness of green and clears to the nasty after- burn of the likes of Filon. This is why it only has real meaning nowadays for ex speed freaks. But it's never been a divvy sound. Play it to a real divvy as part of a sequence of records popular in its day such as Slipping Around, She Blew a Good Thing and Six by Six and they say things like "This sounds like the signature tune tune for a travel show". It does. But in context, in its time it was a sound to chill out to.

Nice to see a scene luminary such as Ady Croasdell not caring if he is called a Divvie & still admitting that these records still have a place. It's always bugged me that just because a tune is popular it has to be condemed !

Love Mitch Ryder myself too, such energy & feeling in his songs !

He has his own website here https://mitchryder.de/index1.php I notice that he still performs, how about someone booking him for one of the weekenders ? They reckon he is a great showman on stage.

One of my favourites of his is the version of 'Come see about me' great thumping Northern ! , word of warning though, there does appear to be two versions ? the one on the Soul Club jukebox is different & not as good as the single for some reason, album track ?

On to 'Touch of velvet' I couldn't care what anyone calls me this will always have a prized place in my collection !!
