Wanna be a dj

Just got back from holiday to find the world has gone mad. Or certainly it has in North West Leicestershire and surrounding areas.

It appears that anyone who has had a passing interest or relationship with rare soul / northern for the last 50+ yrs is now striding out (either under their own name or a ludicrous pseudonym / stage name - they know who they are) as dj's. 

I've DJ'd with some of them over the last few yrs and spoken at length to them and their followers. Not a sound between them - or not as I know them. My good lady has banned us from visiting these venues - She's a good old soulie - Brit / Wigan /Cleethorpes from early 70's so she's heard some shite in her time but also knows a sound when she hears one -  bought me - Mel Williams - Sweet girl of mine - bless her. and refuses to set foot in any of these venues again (What the boss says etc.).

I can understand these people not getting a dime to play garbage, but surely it's not the way forward for any venue or are we surrounded with like minded punters. happy to wallow in a sepia tinted picture of how it never was. Because a lot of them went on the missing list from '78 until 2010 or even later local soul nights are becoming purgatory.

There are hundreds nay thousands of quality sounds out there that don't have to cost a king's ransom but these gigs insist on subjecting us to the same old same old.

Open your eyes and ears or it will all disappear down the gurgler.

I'm off to the Boat tomorrow - I know - same old same old but a lot more expensive. Hopefully Rob & Kate will be there so we can have a moan together - The scene's -----ed.

Ted Massey - Soul Sam - Hammie  - Simon Hunt - Ray Casey - Spive - Mick H  - etc

I'm still trying to get Andy Rix and Tim Brown to do a set.

I think I'm the weak pin in our line and lots of my records were purchased from you!.  Enjoy your weekend.

Having been on the so called scene for nearly 45 yrs and listened to hundreds of so called djs,who when you ask them about certain tunes look at you like you have asked them for a country/western sound ,and answer you with NOT GOT THAT AND I ONLY PLAY TO THE CROWD. We used to go to quite a lot of venues but not so many anymore for precisely that reason .so it's probably a breath of fresh air to hear some so called djs with very odd made up names for themselves come on the scene its all down to the venue ,tunes,and a host of other things that make it for some punters.ive never had the seriouness of that price or that label or I've been into it for 5000yrs .just find some good venue and the rest takes care of itself .
