Looking at some of the sales on here...Whats with the VG/VG+ records at mint prices? I'd have thought in times like these - and it is tough going - people would be reducing prices not increasing them.

how do Pete

"in times like these" ??

is there a recession and can i get some bargains now please?? whistling.gif:thumbsup::yes:

whilst we are on the vg/vg+ topic ,why is there a UK and USA different grading?

recently bought a £250 EX record from uk seller which imho was scuffed and played with pops and cracks.when i phoned to discuss (complain),i was told this was quite acceptible for a uk ex.??

got it exchanged when i said i wanted my money back!

If this is true, I won't be buying any 45s from the UK.....

The best people to buy from in the States are the ones who use the Goldmine gradings because their VG+ is like our EX, sometimes better.

Anyone in the Uk who lists a record as EX and it makes any noise whatsoever is having you on and it shouldn't be graded like that, unless they say EX apart from one click at the start.

Nev I said times like these because it's harder now to sell records than it has been for 10 years, anyone who says it isn't does not know what they are talking about. It's a piece of piss to put a list out once a month, you try doing it every week or twice a week. And if you look at the quality of some of the records I've not been able to sell last few weeks, and at prices below the books - Harrison brothers, Bobby Sheen, Montclairs, TNJ's and so on..it is bad at the moment. Ask Mick Smith, he'll tell you the same. Ask keith Williams, he was on the verge of packing it up a few weeks ago.

THANKS PETE

i know what you mean about tight prices .I do think there are so many people selling at mo and also probably the world wide popularity of soul seems to have made records more accessible ,esp with internet (web sites, private seller lists from usa )and lets not forget ebay!

good luck ,i'd hate to think you had to pack it up and go back to working for somebody else.oh the daily grind :wicked:

alot of the prices for 45s seem to be going up on some dealers lists , some even quote book prices for things that are not mint in the hope that someone who wants a record badly will pay top dollar for a non mint disc

people seem to be chancing their arm to try and rip off other collectors as they need more money to buy stuff from some of the dealers who are pushing up / keeping prices high

some people have had enough of this and that is why the market is slowing down at the moment.

i had a copy of moses smith that i advertised on here and had in my sales box for 6o pounds on original in great condition , it was in there for months and in the end i took 40 and a supremes pic sleeve in trade for it so got around 50ish , looking through a well known dealers sales box at a do last month and he was pricing it at £100

im not the best dealer / collector in the world but there is no way on earth that it is worth anywhere near that but because he is a "big name dealer" people will pay somewhere near it and think that they got a bargin if they knocked him down a little

Hi Dave (djr)

Yes I did buy the Eddie Miller 45.

I did not know that you were a registered user on here but I would like to point out to all the UK guys on here that Dave goes under the name on EBaY as fonkysoul.

I won the record and sent him payment. The day that he received it he sent me an email to verify (great service).

Six days later (which is quick for the US) it arrived and in great shape. His grading is good and far more reserved than the topic here. I would recommend to anyone, if he places a list on the sales section on this site, or on ebay, I would'nt be worried.

I sent cash Dollars.

Thanks again for the 45 Dave

It's bad and can be hard to find records that really perfect but you can get some where it's been played say 2 or 3 times and be excellent price would be say £45 if it's worth £50 but as soon you get very good which can play but not excellent should be sold less. rare record price guide is good to use for gradings and they also price up how much a record would be if in very good condtion etc

Back to the topic.

We may be forgetting how old these records are. 40 yrs?

Vg should be still sound OK but with some background. There's loads of stuff on ebay from the US like this, but it usually shows on the label scan.

The Pookie Hudson 45s keep showing this up and I would leave them alone, but people keep buying them. Is this our own fault?

I'd have thought in times like these - and it is tough going - people would be reducing prices not increasing them.

I can't comment on Northern 45's as I don't get involved in them but there's no problem selling disco boogie and soul 12's 1976 to 1984 whatsoever, keep the prices sensible and they sell continually, even though many are available for next to nothing on ebay, said he sneaking off shortly to place a bid on another bunch.

No arguing whatsoever that the vinyl LP market has slumped remarkably due to CD reissues, but I have no qualms about that, even as a serious collector I'd be only too willing to part with a tenner to obtain an official CD reissue of a £30 + LP especially in the knowledge that there'd be no risk of its corners being bent by bad packaging.

I have LP & 12" lists available if you email me martin.safesounds@btopenworld.com

I must just add that whilst on the subject of conditions, why is it that most collectors and DJs seem to care little about their own items from what I see ? Rarely have I ever seen anyone playing out with records in polylined sleeves, and LP's/12" in plastic outers. Having spent good money on a rare 45 why would anyone just put it in a plain cardboard sleeve where it will be prone to minor scratches everytime it rubs against the hard surface when taken in and out. Even a paper inner then inserted into a card masterbag is a vast improvement. I can honestly say that even 12's I've had in and out of polylined sleeves hundreds of times are still in almost identical condition to the day I bought them, some almost 30 years ago. No excuses !

On the subject of whether 45s are selling, last time I went out I did spend about 3 hours watching very carefully what was going on. I no longer deal in 45s but I had a few to sell and sold about £150 worth.

I didn't see any of the other guys sell anything whilst I was there. I did look through the other boxes cos I had money to spend. IMO all were overpriced to some extent. A 45 I fancied at £50 was bad condition, and judging from general appearance rather than examining vinyl, so was a lot of other stuff, yet were more than Mint price.

Lot of fannying about going on with one guy messing about with a £600 45 for around 30 minutes before it ended up back in the sales box.

Seemed to me that the sellers got their kicks from having the 45s and the lookers got theirs from handling and talking shit all night about them.

Very very sad.

Looking at the lists on here and similar sales from many northern soul sellers is something I only do when I'm keeping an eye out for something that is really difficult to source. Most of the time I even find those records elsewhere.

I've seen people getting excited over "bargains" on here sometimes that are slightly above prices I see elsewhere.

And don't get me talking about the general state of uk grading

What about if the disc is as rare as rare can be? I meanwould you pay a too high a price for a vg if you just knew you were never gonna get a chance at another? I mean Ive got a fooked West Five on a HMV demo (Just Like Romeo and Juliet) English. Its goosed but Ive never seen another.

You're absolutely right, prompted me to order 200 polylined 7" sleeves from bags unlimited. I keep receiving records with no sleeves too which means I am always short of them.
