Malc Burton Malc, trouble is that for most of the new breed of jocks in their 20's & early 30's, thats half of what they know so you could end up being labelled a disco ted if you're not too careful ! Forget all those L.Holloway/First Choice/Salsoul Orch/Gibbons/Levan mixed lates 70's Salsoul tracks, they really are played out beyond belief ! These aren't though : Aurra, Jammers (except Be Mine Tonight), Skyy, Funk Deluxe, Strangers, Sly Cabell, Weeks & Co 'Tunnel, Leroy Burgess Stranger (not the overplayed flip Heartbreaker). But thats just my opinion of course.

Guest mel brat Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 (edited) Revisiting the awesome sounds of the Salsoul label... Moment Of Truth "Helplessly" (originally on Roulette 7") came out on extended Salsoul 12" backed with "So Much For Love" Both fabulous records with a slight throwback feel. "Wide World Of Sports" by Instant Funk (B-Side of "Got My Mind Made Up" in UK) is a classic Jazz Funk instrumental also. By the way, does anyone remember Ian Levine playing Carol Williams' "Rattlesnake" at the Mecca in mid-1975? First release on the Salsoul label I think...(?) More Northern Soul sounding than most later releases. Also, Colin Curtis used to play "Hit Man" by United Image on BRANDING IRON at the Mecca in 1975. United Image later became Double Exposure! - and the official a-side "African Bump" was popular on the London club scene in the late 80's. (Famed Philly arranger Ron Kersey had played keyboards with the group in the early years, apparently) Incidently, I bought "After All This Time" - a very nice 12" by Double Exposure on Gold Coast, from Rafters DJ John Grant, which I made a point of playing at my 40th Birthday party some years ago! The other side "Yes I'm In Love With You" is a very nice Philly ballad, well worth having. You can click the following link to their biography if anyone's interested in seeing them posing in jock straps! (don't all rush at once!) https://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Double%20Exposure.html Edited March 7, 2007 by mel brat
Guest Paul Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 One of my favourite Salsoul albums is Double Exposure's 1976 LP Ten Percent which had three essential soul tracks: "Everyman", "My Love Is Free" and "Baby I Need Your Loving". Another favourite is "Crying" from Instant Funk's Instant Funk LP (1979) which - surprisingly - featured a great ballad called "Never Let It Go Away". Paul Mooney
Girthdevon Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Strangers "Step out of my dream" Blake Right on the money with that one Blake - alongside Instant Funk's 'Can You See Where I'm Coming From', my fave on the label..... Girf
Guest MARTIN SNOW Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Instant Funk's 'Can You See Where I'm Coming From', my fave on the label..... Girf Good shout Gareth, fine track. Overall Instant Funk are way too mediocre tho, you're lucky to get 4 genuinely good tracks out of any of their LP's. The one including Can You See' on it maybe their best of a very average bunch, got a CD reissue of it if anyone needs it. Oh my word, I just checked Instant Funk V and played their version of wait for it, Hard Days Night by The Beatles. I'd never noticed that before. It's absolutely appalling !!! What was Mr.Sigler thinking of ?Can anyone do an MP3 of it for a laugh, I havent got the facility. Instant(ly forgettable) Funk (mostly), best tracks for me Bodyshine, Everybody, I'll be good to you (Richie Weeks), It's Cool, You want my love. (Dont want to hear Mind Made Up again thanks).

Sebastian Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Another good shout, and for both sides, this is getting worrying, a record from as late as 1981 getting raves on here, about time too ! Whats really unusual about this release is that it would appear to be members of Starpoint playing on it, based on the fact that After is written by two of thier members and both sides are Lionel Job productions. Can anyone shed any light on this ? Yeah, both sides on that Gold Coast release are great. The 7" mixes that is, too much filling on the 12" cuts. Surprisingly hard-to-find 7" by the way. Don't know anything about the Starpoint connection I'm afraid.

John Siret Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Hello Two very good Salsoul CD's - PHILLY SOUL FLAVAS & ESSENTIAL BOOGIE FLAVAS both UK releases, there are also some other good releases in this series.
Guest MARTIN SNOW Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 The 7" mixes that is, too much filling on the 12" cuts. Why would anyone want this on a 45 when the 12" sides total 12 minutes and 7 seconds ! Surely if a track is that good you want to hear as much of it as possible ? I'm still trying to figure out that theory.

Malc Burton No, "Disco Teds" is a London term for younger house-come-disco dj's who fuel their collection with oldies comprising little else other than Larry Levan and Walter Gibbons mixes of records that were Paradise Garage classics, most of which are too tired for me to even consider mentioning here, even tho they maybe great tracks. The same people that think Norman Jay is great.............................. Martin
Guest MARTIN SNOW Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Rio De Janeiro:Gary Criss 12" (cheesy blue-eyed disco, but I love it!!!!!) Strange how this has never been popular because lets face it it isnt a lot different to George Duke Brazilian Love Affair which still gets continual raves and sells easy. Theres also an LP to the Gary Criss, Ive got it and the 12" in stock if anyone need them. In fact, got most of the tracks mentioned in this Salsoul forum in stock. Martin Snow

About the same time as Goody Goody etc. It also got a UK 12" release on Carrie if I remember correctly. Another strange one was Wayne St. John "Something's Up", a British recording I think, released here on STATE but it came out on Salsoul in the US which must have pleased him no end! (12" also) I've only just discovered it came out on Canadian RCA 12" also, so somebody must have liked it! Speaking of Europe, has anyone mentioned Silvetti's "Spring Rain" yet? (Well I still love it anyway!) Oh, and let's not forget Ripple "The Beat Goes On", which was a massive Ritz anthem in 1977. Edited March 8, 2007 by mel brat

Bebu Silvetti aka Silvetti (March 27, 1944-July 5, 2003) was an Argentine pianist, composer, arranger and producer best known for the 1976 instrumental Disco hit "Spring Rain". At 21 Bebu left Argentina to go to Spain where he stayed a few years working as a pianist at some of the most popular jazz clubs of the time. In the early 70's he moved to Mexico and started arranging and composing. Upon his return to Spain some years later, he recorded his first album, which contained his mega hit "Spring Rain". Other albums followed. Silvetti returned to Mexico in the late 70's, he continued arranging, composing and producing mostly for other artists. During his long and prolific career, he produced, arranged, and composed for a wide variety of Latin and international artists, including Pl¡cido Domingo, Luis Miguel, Paul Anka, Engelbert Humperdinck, Vikki Carr, and Marco Antonio SolÂs. Nah, it's all good, just splitting hairs here. I wouldn't exactly COMPLAIN if I heard the 12" version somewhere, it's just that I prefer the shorter mix. Plus it's cheaper!

Always assumed he was Italian (because of his name probably) You don't hear string arrangements like on "Spring Rain" anymore either! Great stuff - but I remember it as being 1977, not 1976...? Despite his somewhat off-putting name(!), Wayne St. John sings pretty well in fact, however his vocal suffers somewhat in the mix of "Something's Up" being given no more prominence than the backing track.
