I know we have touched on this many times but I have been asked by a friend to recommend 3 Cd's to demonstrate the best of Northern/Modern soul. She has an eclectic taste in music and is very open minded. I would like to offer a broad spectrum preferably covering 60s and 70s and through to now! I have lots of CD's but would appreciate a more neutral view.

She wants to buy 3 cd's preferably online.

Thank you!

theres a compilation called ''there ain't nothing like shagging'' which you probably already know of. whenever i give people a lift in the car and its playing i always get good feedback from those that wouldn't normally listen to souly stuff.

I don't know if they are still avaliable but the first three Goldmine cd's Essential Norhern, Modern & Detroit are the best I've heard. Usually you only find about three or four great songs on one cd but these are full of songs that you never get tired of.

A toughie ... but for accessable quality:

1 Jumping at the go-go (BMG) (RCA 60s -- I'm just assuming this is still available.)

2. The Wigan Casino Story (Goldmine) (What it says on the tin. Cecil Washington etc)

3. Modern Soul Connoisseurs (Spectrum) (Gloria Scott, Collins & Collins, Timothy Wilson etc)

...and if they like any of that, insist they get Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures vol 1 (Kent). (You won't have to tell them to get the other three volumes, most people would want to do that anyway. The same day, normally.) :(

The best Northern soul all nighter is a good one to start with and i would say northern soul Connoisseurs and modern soul connoisseurs they are the good ones to start with then progress from there

My three favourites are ;

Northern Soul Time (goldmine) - 60 !! great tracks

After Hours 3 - The best of the after hours seris (imho)

Talcum Soul 3 - The best from that seris (imho)

See 3 is a magic number

Another one i like is 'Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities' from Kent, had trouble choosing from these four so i thought i would mention it.

Whoops, i forgot a Modern one.

How about 'K-Tel Disco Nights' ? :(

The Sought After Soul 4cd boxset is a killer - not sure if it's still around, though. Rare Soul Review is more gettable and Soul Spectrum 1 and 2 from BBE are consistently brilliant, mainly 70's modern.

Thanks for the suggestions-they have all been noted!

Any more for any more? I want to give her a list. I suppose I could burn some off for her but I haven't got any cases or anything at the moment!!!

They have to be 'gettable'!

Thanks.

The Big City Soul series was very good, as were the ones that Jo Wallace compiled... Soul Satisfaction. Kent popped out Rare Collectable and Soulful volumes 1 and 2 if my memory serves me right (as far as production is concerned).

Along the known tracks are This Is Northern Soul - many volumes.

Crikey, there are so many!

I've got a very good one called Shrine, The Rarest Soul Label. I can't remember who chucked it out unless I root through the garage at all my cd's

why not let her look at the track listings of some of the recommended cds ,then she can listen to most of the tracks online via soulclub or soulgirls site so she can then hear them and choose what she wants to buy on original cd.

there is nothing worse that people saying you must buy this / you will like this ......................... record/ cd etc only to find when you get it home and put it on the player that it is a load of **** or not your choice of style etc
