Guest
well I went to stoke Nighter, and apart from Sean chapman and Niel Jones who both did a cracking set,the others were in my opinion a little bland,I know some of the folk there thought it was a cracking night, not for me tho' I know when I go to my localish do's with a good mix of tunes ,I never have a bad night are Nighters loosing there way a bit ??????? Give me my local do's anyday Bazza Does not matter where i go ,it always ends up a nighter anyway..If we are not heading off to a allnighter ,everyone ends up in my kitchen.and that litrally is every weekend .take last sat night, only went local to the boat, but the last guest to leave my house ,was at 11am sunday morning you know who you are..sometimes i enjoy playing records and chatting in my kitchen, better than going to a nighter.cuts out all the travelling, and cost and you get to pick your own company, and tunes..thats not to say i don,t like going to nighters, just getting a little more picky on which ones to attend.. Magoo You can do that during the daylight hours cant you, most of us have children. It all depends upon how much you really want to go............you are not neglecting your family if you organise yourself properly, sweeping statement I know & not aimed at anyone specifically, but its an excuse for people who cant be arsed, or who's wifes wont let em out. The Northern Soul scene is an Allnight scene if you aint attending Nighters on a regular basis, you might enjoy the music but your not supporting the greater good of the scene. It wont be long before we are all sat in front of the PC at the wekend listening to a podcast whilst sipping our milky drink, & tapping away on the forum about how much you KTF. btw there are a few exceptions on the soul night front, who with good music policies are making a difference, but in my experience on the whole a good Allnighter is where its at every time & lets face it, its what NS is all about. Russ sorry mate have to disagree much harder with teenager who have a mind of their own ,won t be looked after by anyone as not cool ,but are just too young to be left yet, mines 14 difficult age really. plus won t be seen dead with you during the day. you are in a lucky position your wife stops at home ,mine comes with me Nothing to do with the not wanting to go but when your son is taller than you and flatly refuses to go to Grandmas not alot you can do, dare nt leave them at home Christ remember what we put our parents through when we were teenagers, have a bit of sympathy for them now. As for the cocoa feels that s a bit harsh ,do go to nighters when i can ,prefer nighters especially hate going home at 1am but least I'm out as previously said many numbers dwindle after 4 at nighters anyway maybe due to rebellious teenagers too who knows Nothing personal just different circumstances. Guest just mo
my take on this is living in skegness we have to travel to hear music that is more upfront than can hear locally.if this means 7 hour round trip to soul nites at say the greatstone or 3 greyhounds then it must be done. was over the moon when thorne started again because at under 2 hours away feels local, the same can be said of the britt. would'nt travel to a soul night that i thought had nothing to offer musically. will do soul nites when dj's guesting that i know will put together great sets of music.always try & support certain dj's who i've got the upmost respect for, the ripolles bros, arther fenn, steve green, chic, the greatstone collective spring to mind.all play toons they believe in & play with a passion.but as for normal soul nites, playing same old, same old not for me.some great niters to go to at the moment .seems to me the niter crowd i meet at say, middleton, wilton, lifeline ect are not the same crowd you see at soul nites, & by the same token i dont seem to see many of the people i know who do soul nites at niters. its all down to what sort of music you need to hear. I'll second all that. And add that the journey is part and parcel of a good night out, be it a soul night or a nighter. Must say though, there's nothing more dissappointing about nighters than seeing what looks like the perfect line up and getting there and the dj's play a safe, and somewhat boring set. Quinvy
I personally would prefer allnighters that started at midnight or 1 am like they used and to do a warm up do local to the all-nighter first. All-nighters are starting too early these days not only killing off local soul nights but many people treat the all-nighters as a soul night by going early and heading home at 3 or 4 in the morning and therefore the all-nighter slowly goes down hill as the place empties and the atmosphere can be and usually is lost. I used to start my nighter at 11pm Chalky, but people were arriving earlier and earlier. And I was constantly asked to start at 10pm. So I now do 10pm to 6am as I feel the 8am finnish is too much these days. And the management wouldn't wear it anyway. Link to comment Social source share

I'm a wife that's not let off the leash as often as I'd like.... personally I've always preferred nighters, its just a shame that I can't get out as often as I'd like currently only do 2 regular soul nights - The Orwell in Wigan, and The North Brit in Newton Aycliffe (you'd love them both Russ) nighter wise its Wilton and the occaisional Burnley/Lifeline I would go out practically every weekend if I had the oppertunity, but with a husband that works quite a lot at weekends, 2 children under 5 and me not being sensible enough to drive so have to rely on lifts, scuppers my dancing plans somewhat... still wouldn't have gone to Stoke though.... I'd agree with you Russ if the scene was made up of teenagers but it's not, it's thirty somethings upwards. The scene ain't what it should be now & i'm as much a part of the problem as anyone, it should be about people practicing their dancing during the week, going round their mates house to discuss tunes & raring to go at the weekend to high octaned fuelled uptempo dance music BUT it's not anymore & most of that is to do with age & a few people need to get a reality check & come to terms with that. Saying all that if you're of the older variety as most are on the scene you can still go out & have a decent evening listening to the best music ever made but why do people need to try & prove to themselves that they're still sixteen. Russ Vickers
I think you've got it Jo , was a little bored & was having a little tongue in cheek fun, I dont think your credentials are being questioned either Kirsty. I do sometimes wonder about the passion & commitment of some people these days's tho. I would never advocate anyone not looking after thier children in a correct manner either, but at the risk of repeating myself, there are not many people who couldnt make arrangements to support thier favourite Allnighter on a monthly basis if they wanted to...............I know its hard I have to work weekends, have a young son blah, blah, blah. I also have dilemas on occasion were I feel guilty, but on the whole I tend to find a balance between being a middle aged soul rebel & a loving husband & father. Barry
I know what people mean these days about an 8am finish but to me from 6am to 8 is the only way to cap a night in the true all nighter tradition. There's something about that period, something a little special, that kind of makes the night. I love the fact that you've stretched into the next day....that wandering into normal people's lives after, by the people walking to work at that time's standards, a pretty ab-normal night. There was nothing quite like wandering out into reality at 8 o'clock into Wigan, Morecambe, Sheffield, Hinckley, Leicester, London, Rotherham etc, wherever it may have been, when the sun was shining. Guest Simon
. Russ I agree also Russ, that's definitely what the NS scene should be about but it's not realistic when most of the punters are over 40 years old. I also think the music should be more uptempo but the tempo of that has also come down probably for the same reasons. Saying all that i admire your spirit in trying to achieve what the scene really should be about. Simon Link to comment Social source share

All the lads I knock about with - Deano, Tony Hayzer, Richard Francis, Paul Hawkins etc - all well over 40, all ex week in, week out Northern Soul Boys, still turn out to what I suppose would be deemed 'uptempo' events all year - don't give me the 'we're too old for that type of stuff now' malarky - really!? I'm joshing to some respects as the soul scene, I know is a lot wider and can incorporate more styles and tempo's - but I honestly believe that an uptermpo night could be easily carried off. Russ you got it right.....for me the allnighter is the be all and end all of the scene, a soul night to me doesn't come close, a nighter is a much more edgy affair...it's hard core to a soul nights soft porn , at a nighter the music seems to hit harder and to me there are certain tunes when played at a soulnight seem to lose their power out of the confines of the nighter.....but hey, that's just me . Simon [/quote Hello Si Take your point about people getting older and looking for something a little more midtempo. But I think it's a bit of a myth that everything was 100mph when we were younger. There have always been midtempo records played even at Wigan during it's heyday, James Fountain, Bobby Kline, Bobby Hutton, Ronnie McNeir and more. A lot of the old tunes like Jackie Ross "Selfish One" or Tony Clarke's "The Entertainer" are classic "Northern" Soul, for me anyway, even if they are midtempo. I think these days some people tend to apply a term such as crossover to tempo so if something isn't 100mph then it's not "proper" Northern Soul and shouldn't be played. I know this not what you're saying but I have noticed this attitude in some quarters. I get the same kind of buzz from something like the Artistics "This heart of mine" as I do from "Too Late" it's records with a certain feel that get the hairs tingling on the back of the neck. Uptempo, midtempo, downtempo. All the best mate Manus Link to comment Social source share
Barry
Got to be niters no soul nites come close to a good niter, been a good thread this brought up a lot of interesting points.I can only speak for myself but a few points raised as regards times niters start etc,we start at 8 30 as we have a lot of travellers who arrive early and i think it only fair to let em in as early as possible. As for being empty around 5 or 6 ish we have trouble getting em out at 7 30 and i nearly have to pull the plug out of the wall in the r n b room at around 8 to get em to leave. The staff at middleton who arent workin that nite have started comin to the nites as punters. The last hour at middleton is robbo and always an uptempo set,sat nite at stoke when the lights went on there must have been 600 on the dance floor still wanting more . Looks like I've got my excuse to start again here. Link to comment Social source share

Guest
I like to visit many different places to sample many different experiences. I'll travel far and wide on a regular basis but it's always nice to have something very local (ie a taxi ride) once a month. Link to comment Social source share
