Why so much for shipping?

There isn't much new stuff around available in my preferred format (vinyl) so when something does come up that I want to buy - why is the shipping so expensive?  It's happened a few times recently (again this morning) that a 7" single costs $15 then they want $56 to ship it - which has put me off from buying as it is just too expensive.  $56 is way over the usual cost of shipping for a second hand single.  Why is that?  It is as if they don't want the sale?
