Thinksmart Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 Just seen on the news that Tina Turner has died aged 83.
Popular Post Baz Atkinson Posted May 24, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2023 Ah Just My Broom Mr Ms how good was that as a mad 14 year year old ! It seemed to knock the spots of the pop music played downstairs that record along with a few others defined my youth I still get goosebumps now when I play it loud . I know her contribution was way beyond this but sone of them early tracks on Sue / Tangerine were fantastic imho ! A real icon not only for her immense contribution to the R/B world but also for over coming a torrid abusive well documented relationship etc . 7
Soulman58 Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 Just heard about this. RIP Tina, a true musical Icon and a ball of fire live. Proud Mary and River Deep two songs that never diminish in their intensity.
Wayoutgirl Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 Sad news to hear of her passing. A great performer and moved with the times with her relevant releases throughout the decades.
David Meikle Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 I saw Tina in Glasgow in 1984. She was in great form and made it an evening to remember. Simply The Best.
Soulmark Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 Sad news what a legend dust my broom fantastic record one of my favs RIP tina
Amsterdam Russ Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 RIP - one of the greatest. Interesting but uninformed perspectives on her huge legacy from various new sources, including one from the BBC (see below). I read one that stated her name was Anne Annie Bullock! Like all news sources, they only see Tina in terms of her chart success, and not the impact she had across her whole career (including the advancement of the careers of the various Ikettes), whether in those early hard, hard times, or as her fantabulously reinvented self. RIP one of the last great legends. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-65672639 2
Shinehead Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 Saw her in Sheffield 1984 she was brilliant and a night to remember for ever. Heard '' Dust My Broom '' in the local the other night which was a surprise , great record. R.I.P. Tina.
Westender Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 One of the greats. Fantastic, distinctive, original singer with an electric on stage persona.
Carty Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 R.I.P. Tina , Particularly love the many early Sue 45s.
Kathryn Magson Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 Such sad news - I saw Ike & Tina at The Wheel in the 1960s - one of my favourite acts - they just blew the roof off! Absolutely brilliant & so good that she survived the abusive relationship she had with Ike Turner to become the iconic singer that she was. We had no idea at the time how badly she was treated by him. R.I.P. Tina 2
Torch56 Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 There's a really interesting tweet from Paul Mason about Somebody Somewhere being played in Ms in the 70s that's worth seeking out. I remember Dust My Broom from Up The Junction in 1972 but I'm pretty sure it was getting plays before then. Commercially of course her career really took off later on. One of the few artists who made it really big with the mainstream audience after contributing to the fledgling northern scene. RIP.
Happy Feet Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 I was very lucky to have been at the Brighton Top Rank , when Tina made her comeback , brought the room to a standstill with her version of " Let's Stay Together" , ( unfortunately for Jean Carn ) but a night that I'm sure she and the audience went home feeling happy. She'd finally thrown off the shackles and loved every minute of it , and went on to enjoy a career so long lasting , she deserved ,, RIP TINA X.
