Owd Codger Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 An interview in today's Guardian with Pascal Jensen, Manager of AZ Alkmaar who play West Ham United tonight. Turns out he is the son of London born singer Sue ( Challoner) who moved to Amsterdam in the 70s looking for work. The duo appear to have had a few Dutch pop hits. I wonder how they got the Moments, Chuck Jackson's track? 1

Owd Codger Posted May 11, 2023 Author Posted May 11, 2023 Just wondering how they got the rights to use it.
Solution Amsterdam Russ Posted May 11, 2023 Solution Posted May 11, 2023 Likely because Negram had licensed All Platinum material. It says on the label, “Produced for Red Bullet Prod and All Platinum by A Goodman and J Eggermont.” https://www.discogs.com/master/61908-Spooky-Sue-Ive-Got-The-Need/image/SW1hZ2U6MzUwMzM4NDU= Oh, and here’s a link to the Guardian article: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/may/11/pascal-jansen-az-alkmaar-manager-west-ham-europa-conference-league-semi-final 1

Benji Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 (edited) Maybe because it was played at Wigan Casino and a demand for it. Edited May 11, 2023 by Benji 2

Mickey Finn Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 (edited) Not impossible ... there was a lot of music made in and by people from the former Dutch Guiana (now Suriname) and the quality was sometimes very high. There seems to have been a big enough market for soul-related music in Amsterdam for it to be made locally: Billy Jones was from Texas but settled in Amsterdam and recorded a few albums there. Edited May 11, 2023 by Mickey Finn Additional info
Keamus Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 Always liked Billy Jones tune. Classy bit of crossover and cheap as well! 1
Nickinstoke Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 Apologies if this has been done to death, but one of my favourite bits of trivia is that Spooky was lead singer of the Dutch band “Swinging Soul Machine”, hence the title of their instrumental, “Spooky’s day off” 1
Sunnysoul Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 Here's Spooky & Sue in all their glory from 1975 doing I've Got The Need !!! 1 1

Thank you for the lesson on Suriname and soul music! Here's an interesting article on the subject written by a couple of chums... http://www.sirshambling.com/articles/surinam_soul/index.php 2
Popular Post Steve G Posted May 13, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 13, 2023 (edited) Their producers got the backing track directly from Al Goodman on a visit to Europe. Full story in my forthcoming book on AP. S&S story is quite interesting on a number of levels since there were two "Spookys". Anyway, looks like there will be some interest in it when I publish later this year. Edited May 13, 2023 by Steve G 9

I met Harry with Hans Diepstraten last summer at the Blackpool festival, having been introduced to their radio show earlier by Colin Brown. I have a copy of this, apparently a second volume of a 2-part series: Some worthy uptempo sounds here. 1
