there was one on ebay for £1600 which i thought was expensive .

I’ve been collecting northern records since 1985 - not as long as some, longer than a few. I have given up being surprised at prices, but I did blink at The Ascots. I‘ve had three of the buggers over the years. Regrettably I no longer have any of them 😀

I looked at the bidding history on the Ascots there were only 4 bids, 2 at low £400's then 3rd at just below winning bid

I'm not saying there's anything dodgy going on but that is odd.

Not really. Two people really want the same record, so put in OTT bids top secure win and blow everyone else out. There is a famous story that involves two major league DJs (no names) who both wanted the same 45 real bad. So they both bid OTT to ensure no lightweights got in the way and they would win the record. One guy who put in an OTT bid won it, but at a much higher price than he expected to pay.

Yep - I'm aware of that story, and many others.

I've been collecting records since 1985, and have often bid high on stuff (ie thousands) for exactly that reason, to make it more likely I'll secure records I really want.

I just think it's an odd record to go that high on that quickly.

It's absolutely great, and certainly fairly rare, but there are copies about - I can see 14 have sold on eBay alone in the last 15 years or so with a high price of £956 (in 2017). Most recent sale, last year, was £769 (VG- though).

Added to which, I know of a number of private sales. There must be plenty I/we don't know about, too.

As I say, not imputing anything dodgy - it's just surprising (in my opinion) to go to £2k+...if the purchaser had put a want on here saying 'prepared to pay £1.5k' (which I still think would be steep!) I reckon he'd have been killed in the stampede.

But that's record collecting - no rhyme nor reason sometimes, and no-one can get inside the head of another buyer.

Yes but you also have to factor in that many collectors are not on here. JM has a large reach, and is able to get prices that few others would. And also some collectors appear to be very wealthy, who just shell out no questions asked. It's probably easier for them to just overpay than spends their days and nights sourcing a cheaper copy. That's the collecting world in 2023. The overbid I mentioned involved the Gentlemen Four, again not a really rare record. Fortunately, the person who won it was able to laugh about it afterwards and tell me the full story.

Ah - if it's G4 then it's not the story I thought you were talking about (though that in itself proves your/my point I guess!)
