macca Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 rightly or wrongly, many people consider motown to be bereft of soul. I'm sure that more than a few in memphis/chicago pooh-poohed the detroit set up too. jealousy? M

Guest Paul Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Stax was the greatest soul music institution of them all. After being stiffed in the '60s and stiffed again in the '70s, the company was used by some of its own people as a political football towards the end. Despite their problems, internal and external, they were very creative and prolific. When their doors closed it really was the end of an era. Paul Mooney ESSENTIAL PURCHASES: The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles Vol 1 (1959 - 1968) The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles Vol 2 (1968 - 1971) The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles Vol 3 (1972 - 1975)
Guest Bogue Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 The label has never been given the plaudits it deserved IMO Agree with that, it was very much second cousin on the Northern scene but there are some great tracks. Personaly, i liked the recognised Stax sound too, whereas a lot of Nsoul lovers seemed to dislike it.

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 The label has never been given the plaudits it deserved IMO Think you'll find that, outside of Northern circles, lovers of soul music have ALWAYS given Stax the 'plaudits it deserved'. I certainly don't know anyone who doesn't regard it as one of the greatest record labels of all time...
Lloydee Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Just pulled this of the Perretta website: https://www.porrettasoul.it/eng/html/news.htm The Porretta Soul Festival will held July 19 - 22 and the line-up confirmed is "Tribute To Stax 50th Anniversary" with Booker T. & The MGs, Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns plus the Blues Brothers Band with Eddie Floyd, Jimmy McCracklin, Sir Mac Rice, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Sweet Nectar (Jimmy's background singers) , Betty Harris, Jon Tiven Band, Toni Green, Austin DeLone R&B Band. There's about 8 or 10 of us going; booked it, packed it and ready to feck-off for a great week in Italy
John Reed Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 It's definately one of my favorite lables, with my prefernce from the years 69-75, when it got more "black", with Hays, Porter, etc taking more control. I also went to an all night do at the Scala Cinema in the late 80's (I think) for a blaxploitation film night + music, with accross 110th Street, Cleopatra Jones and the awsome "Whatstax". I've been trying to get a copy, was it ever released on video or DVD? I think it would be great if we could have a day, where we post up sounds of "the great and the good" as a tribute to 50 years. John
