Happy new year folks !  Thought I'd ask you all about your favorite little or lesser known tracks on the labels we all collect that sit outside of 'genre ‘records, you know the Northern, Popcorn, lowrider ilk records.  Admittedly they are getting less and less, as anything good gets a price tag.  But there are stil loads of major and independent label tracks out there that sit quite comfortably gaining very little attention, which are importantly for the folks on here, allot cheaper...!

So I thought I'd share a few of my own, I actually sold these recently, and of course I wish I hadn’t now !

What are yours?

Solomon Burke - Suddenly / Atlantic

Jerry Butler - Loneliness / Mercury

George & Gwen McRae - Mechanical Body  LP only? Ive never seen a 45, but I really rate this song...

Clyde McPhatter - Crying Wont Help You Now / Mercury

btw, instead of a thread full of you tube inserts, just list list em or give us a scan, and link the pick of the bunch...

Mal 🙂

Two Solar label cuts that I highly rate. Lakeside is available as a flip-side 45. Shalamar cut is LP only.

Excellent choice, always liked the slow material by the group Lakeside. The moody 'Show you the way' & 'Say yes' are firm favorites and available on 7". The Whispers cut some nice material on Solar, the excellent 'You'll never get away' is a great litle dance track IMO, brilliant harmonies, but I suppose it would be, it's the Whispers arranged by Gene Page and Tom Tom 84! .

Hi Andy

The Whispers " you'll never get away" is a lovely stepper and yet never played or even taken notice of. Had a spare copy in the sales box but never any interest. Quite tough to get as its a non-hit.

There's no pic of the 45 on the t'interweb, apart from the other side.

Thought Id link the Gwen McRae track I mentioned..

Leon ware is from his electra Lp, not an Inst as such but has Leon's signiture backing vocals which he changes about in the mix, I dont know the technical term, but I love the track!

Michael henderson may be big on other 'scenes' I don't know, but its just a brilliant record..

It strikes me that the one 'genre' of soul that NEVER gets played out, or I never hear it anyway, is 'country soul.' There are loads of superb records of this type, here are just two:

It's a lovely track Andy and as you say so underrated. I think I have a full set of Whispers 45s - certainly all the Solar cuts. The rarest 45 by far is 'Grove Street', a non-album b-side. It's the issue flip to '(You're a) Special Part of My life. Dozens of promo copies available but containing stereo/mono of A-side. Strangely I located a my copy (and four others) in New Zealand. It's almost unknown. I put it up on You Tube.

The daddy of them all IMHO is their version of the Bread classic "I wanna make it with you".
