Simon These things will keep me loving you. Was one of the records that stirred my interest in this music as a spotty kid. And I still love it every bit as much today.
Guest Jamie Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 As a kid was deffo 'Lonely Lonely Girl Am I'. Still a top notch dancer IMHO. Sold my VIP copy for about £30 2 years ago. Far too cheap. That Pikey fella bent me up

Rbman Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 These things will keep me loving you. Was one of the records that stirred my interest in this music as a spotty kid. And I still love it every bit as much today. What a fantastic record.....still play it on a regular basis M
Guest Rowly Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Goes for a ton now! Simon Really? got one about 6months ago for £50...
Guest in town Mikey Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 What a fantastic record.....still play it on a regular basis M Aided by the angst of youth, I can remember getting very frustrated and angry that others couldnt see just how mind blowingly fantastic this tune was. Even guys who might like Get Ready, or Mustang Sally. Because it wasnt a regular play on the radio it had absolutely no standing with them at all. Now I am perfectly happy they have their Phil Collins and stuff to listen to on CD
Guest vinylvixen Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Goes for a ton now! Simon How much for a UK Red and white TMG demo I put 'That's the reason why' on one of the Soul Satisfactions... It's my CD so I'll play what I want to Um....it would have to be 'These Things'...Jo

Jaco Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 First record I ever bought - "These things...." Still would be my favourite, despite other great tracks, especially "Lonely, lonely girl am I". In my opinion a timeless masterpiece.
Guest Simon Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Really? got one about 6months ago for £50... Think you got a nice bargain there mate, i'd be well happy with a copy for that price. Simon

Guest Simon Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I put 'That's the reason why' on one of the Soul Satisfactions... Good choice, Jo! Incidentally is it me or does TTRW sound a bit like the theme tune to Adrain Mole aged 13 3/4? Simon
Sweeney Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I quite like their version of "Boy from Crosstown"
Scallybob Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Has to be "A Bird In The Hand". Mike Terry is awesome on it!

Guest Heartandsoul Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 (edited) In my opinion the two best Velvelettes tracks are: https://the.soulclub.org/stream/The_Velvele..._Is_So_Good.ram https://the.soulclub.org/stream/The_Velvele...tle_Longer).ram Pity they were only ever released as Test Pressings. Simon T Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 (edited) let love live - velvs - 15094 refosoul Friday night at this time, he must be p*ssed. Sorry I’m not. This is the finest piece of music ever recorded, shame it never made it to vinyl. I think Norma and Bertha had left (1964) before it was recorded (1966) Never too late for me to try to brighten my lonely day To frighten my clouds away, ooh if the right words you will only say Baby show a little spark of love And it wouldn't be so dark above Inside me burns a flame Ah I can't believe it burns in vain Cause, what goes around, you know it really might come right back around And my love you might return If I let this torch I hold for you just burn I'm gonna let love live a little bit longer Let the torch burn a little bit stronger Let it live, let it burn Let it live, let it burn No baby, it's never too late to make you see Darling you belong right here with me And one day, that's where you're gonna be So I'll hold on so patiently Although you said we're all through I'm gonna carry this torch for you Sweetie pie, there's just no doubt No, I don't wanna put the fire out Cause, what goes around, you know it really might come right back around And my love you might return If I let this torch I hold for you just burn I'm gonna let love live a little bit longer Let the torch burn, a little bit stronger Let love live, a little bit longer Ain’t gonna ever put the fire out Gonna let love live ah just a little bit longer And I’m gonna let the torch just burn a bit stronger Edited February 24, 2007 by Simon T
45cellar Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 (edited) So difficult this, neglected to some extent by Motown. A sort of poor relation to the other groups as far as releases go, and then we discover the wealth of recordings on the marvelous Double CD Collection. The Motown Anthology I love The Velvelettes, but If I was pressed I would have to say Lonely, Lonely Girl Am I. However I have been to a couple of functions recently, weddings etc where the DJ has played "Needle In A Haystack" and the like, in order to help get the party in full swing. Once the Dance floor is full to breaking point, all ages, he then turns to the chart of the day and the dance floor starts to empty. Good Move MR D.J. ........ Guest martyn Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Has to be "A Bird In The Hand". Mike Terry is awesome on it! Seconded ! How much would a VIP demo fetch these days ?

Without a doubt it's just got to be 'Needle in A Haystack'. No matter how many times I hear it, no matter how much i get told its cheesy, no matter how much the chin-strokers diss it........IT'S AWESOME.... I hate to say the following (cos it's dead boring so to do!) but.......... just imagine if this was found in the can today as an unreleased jobbie. There'd be questions asked in parliament, a special parade would be held down whitehall in its honour, it could bring peace to the world. Goddamit, it would even make my mucker Rob Thomas smile! From those opening bars of pure fantasticness, its one of the best ever. IM(nv)HO, of course I might even have it played at my funeral to cheer things along (just before 'Keep The Fires Burning') Hey there's a thread.... 'Records I'm Having At My Funeral'. I'm sure it must have been hammered before though....?? Happy days! Steve

Steve RE: 'Records I'm Having At My Funeral' Sadly my father in law passed at Christmas, we had his funeral at the beginning of this year. The question of music to be played came up, and I was shocked to discover that they had stopped people bringing their favourite CD or tape etc Apparently, If it isn't on our vast database they said then unfortunately we can't play it. We do try and have only failed a couple of times to find someones favourite piece of music. Shocked Surely this is wrong. Edited February 24, 2007 by 45cellar

That Pikey fella bent me up Nonsense, It sold well enough in the states to warrant being a £30 record. It wasn't me who had you over anyway, twas Judithcashelle... a proper Motown collector if ever there was one. I was just a negotiator.
Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 A Bird in the Hand was always the favourite, but then I discovered Let Love Live. Anyway I have heard the ladies sing both tracks live so I'm quite happy, another ambition realised Dave

Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 2 for me. Needle in a Haystack but Lonely Lonely Girl Am I is pure Northern Soul played out far less here and not sure how much it's played across the country
timthemod Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Has to be "A Bird In The Hand". Mike Terry is awesome on it! Not as good as James Jamerson's opening bass lines, killer!!! Love these girls, my favourite Motown girl group, but isn't Needle In A Haystack an overplayed classic. Also love 'Aint' No Place Like Motown'
Guest Lady Maverick Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK and LET LOVE LIVE are my favorites from them.
Guest WorcSoulSurvivor Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 It just has to be both Needle in a Haystack and These Things Will Keep Me Loving You.
