Mustang Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Had some strange activity in my PayPal account from someone who i don't know. Basically i think it was a scam, a money request for a large sum of money buying crypto, obviously all nonsense. They gave a number to phone if you don't recognise the payment,if you phone they will try and get your details. Cancelled the PayPal request, they will get a cancel notification. Don't know if this is related to what is happening here, certainly looks like it is.They will try anything, absolute scumbags, could be one or a team. KTF
Damian Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Just now, Mustang said: a money request for a large sum Had same thing recently, panicked at first until I realized it was only a request and not an actual transaction - just went in and canceled it, like you did - several days passed since and no consequence.
Mustang Posted December 2, 2022 Author Posted December 2, 2022 They want you to panic and hit the wrong button, the scumbags will try it all, thankfully you cancelled. I think it stems from here,do you mate?.
Damian Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Just now, Mustang said: They want you to panic and hit the wrong button, Yup, that's my take on it as well. Or be clueless enough to call and be scammed further. In my case it happened sometime last weekend so this hadn't happened yet - I think it was just a random try and not related.

I'd say can't be connected to Nathan Davis scam as your one involves phones set up etc etc The Nathan Davis matter was as far as aware one geezer pm-ing members in reply to posted wants, so far one person is out of pocket So say not really a large scale fraud setup as per your case Plus who ever is doing your scam would need your paypal email Is it out in the public world?
Mike Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 ok to avoid any confusion/mis-understandings will shortly split off the paypal request scam posts to a separate topic in freebasing as non-related now done
Mustang Posted December 2, 2022 Author Posted December 2, 2022 No not generally, normally quite careful with e-mail address. My understanding around data is that it can get sold etc:,so criminals can try and scam people even though they don't know the person directly,it is done randomly, they never know your name. Not on the social media platforms, so a bit of a mystery.
Mustang Posted December 2, 2022 Author Posted December 2, 2022 I have checked information regarding these fake payment request scams from PayPal. There are explanations on the Glasgow and Derbyshire Police websites. The scammers exploit a function on the money request. They can set up a false PayPal account and request payments from other user accounts randomly, they don't need your e-mail address to do this. They can also place a note in the request including the fake phone number,if you do ring the number they try to pressurise the victim to pay money. KTF
Mustang Posted December 3, 2022 Author Posted December 3, 2022 Had my detective head on for a while now. This is for our Moderator team. I believe there is a strong link with this Nathan Evans character to the PayPal request scam,i have not had a request before the pattern of contact to members on our website. I think it is possibly a team of criminals, they are studying members profiles to work out who is using PayPal,that is why they are doing dodgy deals with false records to find out who is using PayPal with Family and Friends. Then they try and steal members money with the record deal and in the background attempt a PayPal money request to try and steal more money from other members. I have explained the findings on the PayPal money request scam from Police websites. I believe they are using members messaging trail on the profiles to work out who is using PayPal and would recommend to our moderators that they hide the messages in the future. I also think that they are probably using a VPN system to try and knock investigators off the ip trail. There is a definite link between the two scams,it is clearly obvious. Hope this helps folks. KTF.

KTF. thanks for your thoughts have just posted a topic on the nathandavis matter with details https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/435027-sales-alert-nathanevans-details-pm-selling/ have to say strongly disagree with you assumption that there is a 'definite link' with your own paypal scam experience involving 'teams of criminals ' and a guy sending pms on here given the nature of your posts maybe best to send thoughts to the moderation team direct via pm as discussing such security measures and recommendations in public can actually affect measures already in place regards
