The "Allnighter" series on Goldmine features a nice selection of rarer sounds.

"After Hours" series featuring great sides from Atlantic/Warners.

"Talcum Soul" series, cheap as chips these and feature lots of the classics, up to vol 5 now.

And agree with everything on Kent!

Gordy

welcome to the world's finest music kevin

i would personally suggest the early kent stuff - for dancers only, for dancers also, floorshakers, footstompers - if still available

also go here for sounds (not all northern but 99% are soul, as you'd expect from the name): Soulclub

Absolutely agree Dan. Floorshakers, Foostompers and Brainstormers, you couldn't get a better start.

Wigan casino Story cd's from Goldmine too.

Get yourself out and about where they give free CDs out to the first 50/100 etc through the door as they usually have tunes on them that the top DJs are playing at the moment and its a great way for DJs to shoe there collections off too.

i have never had a bad one and not only that you get a great night of soul chucked in too.

CD's are a great way to learn tunes, hear new things etc. know a few who got into Northern, started collecting CD's then started to collect their fave tracks on vinyl. That way madness lies!!!! Could do worse than the sounds section here, and with a bit of computer jiggery-pokery, make your own CD's.....

All the above suggestions,,sweetie...go with....from there, you will discover all the varying styles within the rare soul genre...however...if you really want to hear a cross section of the finest Northern and a touch of Modern...then you tune into Mark bicknell's soul shack on Sunday nights on Solar Radio..0129 between 8 and 10pm GMT...if you want to experience the Modern side...you can do no worse than Shaun Robbins on Sunday Morning between 10am and noon,,on the same channel..but what ever you choose..i hope you get as much pleasure out of the music as i have done over the last 30+ years babes. Delxx

Or you may also keep in the Northern side  . In that case, I'd also recomend the Wigan Casino Story . It was the best way for me to start in the northern world about two years ago. Still a current play in the iPod

If you can get hold of a copy of Dave Flynn's, Sought After Soul 4CD box set, I'd recommend it. yes.gif

Out of curiosity, is this a legit set of CDs, and if so, where can they be obtained?

I remember Dave Flynn at the Dome (oh happy days) and also at These Old Shoes once. A man of good taste and a fine collection.

I personally think the kent stuff is second to none. one of my favourites is 'living the nightlife'. it kicks off with 'carlena' & then never lets up. some from the goldmine series would come in handy too, particularly the ones covering the scene's legendary venues, just to get the historical perspective. I would also do it strictly chronologically, starting with the birth of soul cd, by the time you get to the stafford years, you'll have gathered together a truly diverse musical collage of what this scene is all about. as other members have warned you, beware the road to vinyl servitude, once shackled, very few break free... ;-)

good luck!

Geoff see Johns post for availability, can't remember who put it out but I never thought it was anything but legit.Absolute essential CD & brilliant booklet as well :P

& for the post (tongue in cheek I know) re CDs & moans, I doubt you'd find anybody against listening to CDs at home, it's when you start playing them out as a "CDJ" that the shit will rightly be thrown (part 672) ..............

It was released in 1998 on label called Clubmasters, remember it was advertised at the time in some magazine (think it was Echoes), also had a companion CD of which was modern/funk stuff I think (probably wrong my memory is shot to pieces).

used to have the cd but was nicked when i had the car stolen off my driveway last year, along with about 20 other NS cd's  .. if you see some dodgy geezers driving round essex in a black A4 with Johnny Rogers, the professionals and the like blasting out the CD.. could you please inform the nearest constabulary!

Joking aside, they found the people responsible, although neither the car nor the CD's were ever recovered!!!! i

as Del pointed out, this CD really is the biz, not a duff track on this and a great introduction to Northern

:D Very similar happened to my Sis Viki a few years ago..they pinched her Volvo right outside our parents house....and like you...she had her Northern tapes as well as her prized Otis Redding one...when the culprits were caught...the police handed back her Northern ones but not the Otis one...The arresting officer turned round to her and said that after giving some of the tapes a listen..he wouldve given them back as well!!!! :P Delxx

just do what me and my dad do and collect as many of the original songs on cd as possible from cd's that use original recordings and no re-recordings of late 80's and 90's. always look for cheap ones and must have about 50 cd already in a box and keeps growing. but vinyl is a good intrest to us.

my dad said this to me if only all his thousands of pop, rock, normal soul, country, indie, metal, rock 'n' roll, folk etc was all Northern soul original singles he would be a happy man and well that is a dream

Sure I've got this somewhere, the sound quallity is crap if I remember correctly.

I think you will find, with rare soul, that the tunes you enjoy at home, sound completely different when you hear them played out. And vice versa, the tracks you have discounted as not your to taste will jump up and bite you when played out.

CD's are great, but you really need to get out into the atmosphere to truely understand what this music is all about. A lot of tunes sound nothing played at home, but stick em on at 1200 watts in a large dark room filled with like minded souls, and WHOE!!!!!

I think to most people it's like a journey. Most prefer the Motown and more comercial type sound when they first get into "THE MUSIC" but then move on to the harder sound with less production with time.

Welcome to THE scene Kevin.

Phil.

No idea if it is available on CD, but my fave compilation is Capital Soul Casino.

Some great tracks on there, Danny Wagner, Gene McDaniels, Little Anthony to name just 3.

Just a quick thought too. The fantastic limited edition LP - Up All Night, released about 1983, Did anyone ever copy this to CD? I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was a moody LP (Werent some of the tracks still covered up?). For me all the tracks still stand the test of time, and I loved the way they split the 60s and 70s. Would have been an awesome set.

If you are just hearing all these tunes for the first time, it would be great to get an update on what compilations you have bought, and what tracks you enjoy the most.

Listening without prejudice is something we all lost the privaledge of doing too long ago.

Good choice. Is this the one that originally came out on vinyl LP about 1978/9? It was one of my first introductions to northern. Also contains 'baby mine' 'the end of our love' 'lonely man' etc..? A brilliant album. I've been looking for the vinyl version on ebay. Probably too oldies orientated for a CD release thesedays. I'd like to own the LP though.

I agree about listening without prejudice. I always use the phrase 'new to my ears' if i hear stuff i haven't heard before. I'm still worried to admit i don't know some sounds though, plus i've got a terrible memory for stuff played so i'm constantly hearing things i should remember from twenty odd years ago and think they are new  .
