My very old dishwasher finally died this week and I headed off to the shops to get  new one.. was in curry's looking around and a sales assistant asked what I was looking for.  Told them I just wanted an economic dishwasher with a timer so I can make use of my economy 7 lol.

They said are you sure you don't want a smart dishwasher as it sends messages to your phone if it needs rinse aid or more dishwasher salt. I said does this basic model not tell you that?? Yes it does it tells you on the display when it needs any.. it cost £249 smart ones £300 more . Am I really missing something are people this sad that they spend £300 more just to have it sent to their phone.  Or am I getting old lol

In our house I'm usually "the very old dishwasher" but hopefully have many more years yet. I'm not sure how smart I need to be to wash up but I can tell when I need more Fairy or hot water.

The concept that everything needs to be controlled by a smart phone is another way to sell more stuff at a higher price. For some people this maybe useful but like you I'm quite happy with a basic machine that does what you want. The last microwave we got can do loads of different things and can be programmed to come on and off anytime, yet all we do is bake spuds and warm things up. Our two year old printer can also do all sorts of fancy things but still gets paper jammed.

Maybe we are all getting old and set in our ways but I suppose companies have to innovate or we'd never get any thing new.

My dentist tried selling me a smart electric toothbrush what you link to your phone to tell you what I do not know ? I just f**@@d him off.

Some fools must buy these things I would imagine ?

I've got enough new additional info coming via my phone as it is....

Cars, car charger, Sonos, Ring etc etc.

Last thing I want is stuff that doesnt need to, pinging me with trivial nonsense (like a dishwasher).

I can see a central heating app being useful in the current energy climate....must look into that.

Water softener replaced and guy tried to tell me to link it to my phone so that when I am away I can get it to soften water before I come home. Still can't seem to log in but actually glad. Bloody ridiculous. Quite enjoy being nowhere near my phone - life was much simpler before mobiles.
