Supercorsa Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 There's a number of records that recently, in my opinion are being over priced, not just this one. Records that were commonly seen at between £150 to £250, now seem to be listed at £350+. Many now out of the reach of alot of collectors. 3

However, the copies before these two sold for 250/300 quid max. So there seems to be a rise in demand from whatever part of the world. 1

I'm told that the b side is driving demand. Even so, it's not that rare ! 2
Benji Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 Sounds reasonable, B-side is a nice lowrider sound. It used to be shit-rare and four figures before a few NOS boxes were found and price went down. I guess even though many of these unplayed copies are in circulation demand is higher than supply these days. 3
Mal C Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 reminds me of Clara Hardy, was the same wasnt it... I think it was an one off, at the time for Richard Searling... 2
Frankie Crocker Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 Big spin for Butch back in the day. Then a few turned up. Great record and still unexposed to the masses so hardly surprising people are waking up to it. Prices are going bonkers just lately. Most sellers seem to want top dollar ie what the record just sold for on Manship’s auction or eBay. Records should be priced to sell - if they're too expensive, they won’t sell
Popular Post Amsterdam Russ Posted July 8, 2022 Popular Post Posted July 8, 2022 1 hour ago, Frankie Crocker said: Big spin for Butch back in the day. It was a huge spin for Ian Clarke at the 100 Club back in the 80s, and always one of my favourites from those days (that intro - BANG!). Can't fully recall the story now, and no idea how accurate it might have been anyway, but didn't he pay something like 500 quid for it at the time (very similar to the tale of Danny Moore's "Somebody new")? Then, as said, multiple copies turned up. I recall being at a small soul night in a London pub post-2000 (with my old mate Chris Harvey aka Trickster - first time I'd seen him in an age), and a DJ played it stating it was an exclusive, thinking they'd discovered it for themselves. Of course, Chris and I pointed out the flaws in that belief. But, wasn't it a Wigan spin for Richard Searling at some point in those far distant days known as the 70s? The flip has been popular on the deep soul scene for many a year, so it's definitely a large fermented apple juice. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... AKA - a double-sider. 4 1
Popular Post Chalky Posted July 8, 2022 Popular Post Posted July 8, 2022 It was Richard Searling's "Embers - Playing The Part Of A Fool" cover up at Wigan. Gary Rushbrooke got one shortly after. Keb then played it at Stafford. Few turned up? 100s more like. The finder got the whole remaining stock from the estate of whoever owned the label. 7

I'm curious - how many copies made up "the whole remaining stock"? Hundreds? Guesswork on your part, hearsay or fact? And did Keb or Ian Clarke play it first at the 100-Club-Stafford Siamese-twin thingy? I reckon it was Clarky. I always associate it with the latter from the 80s.

I guess we will never know the full amount found but it was well into three figures, enough has been said about the find in the past. I don't remember Clarkie playing it at all TBH.
Keamus Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 Remember when the job lot turned up. Think about 2005 there was a constant stream of them appearing on eBay. Was it the label owner who was selling them?

Mot Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 (edited) If I remember right......I bought one when the stock was found............think it was about £50 to £60............I'm sure I've seen it as low at £30 at one point.........really surprised its jumped up to the prices noted above............sold mine a long while ago now and struggled to get my money back on it! davidwapples Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 I picked one up for 35 when the find had diluted the market and flipped it a couple of years later for 60 ish on trades. Theres a lot out there now but most are now tucked away till the daft offers appear
Solidsoul Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 (edited) As mentioned earlier, it was a Richard Searling exclusive at Wigan Casino covered as the Embers. I remember thinking this is a record I will never be able to own. I was so pleased to be able to get one when they turned up in quantity. Full on Northern Soul with a superb slower tempo flip. I would never sell my copy and a lot of copies will be staying in serious collections! So market forces push up the price! Edited July 8, 2022 by Solidsoul 2

I think one of the guys who contacted Clem Price used to sell on here? I bought an acetate of Joe King - Speak On Up from him on here, which has changed hands a few times since. all that Prix stock came from Clem Price, or as you say his estate. 2

Mal C Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 (edited) Just checked my inmails on here, I dont seem to have the original in mails about buying the Acetate Ive mentioned above but I do have this: Prix label owner Clem Price, The label address on the acetate is Harmonic Sound Production 1482 Felix Drive which is a different address to what appears on the release Prix record. Harmonic Sound Productions is the in house production company the song is produced by the label owner and written by the artist who was a staff musician. So it is a publishing promo as the address being different to the label address etc. I'm reliably told the guy this came from had all the tapes and master record plates etc. So all this chap had all the original tapes and master record plates, and quanity of Joe King, Eddie Ray & Royal Esquires 45's, which is where the Eccentric Soul boys got the Demo version etc of 'You Got Me' Eddie Ray etc... I assume Edited July 8, 2022 by Mal C 1
Ady Potts Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 The quantity came via 'Brooklyn Born' Joe Giattino & Rich Rosan. Same people that things like Frederick Hymes, Four Voices Gold label, San Francisco TKO's, Toby Bullard etc came from. Rich came up to me at a record show back then, he was after large quantity of 78's. Didn't matter if they were cracked or broken he said he wanted to melt them. First thing I thought was he wanted to convert the shellac into French polish. 1 1

Greedy Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 (edited) Always been one of my favourite records. I have a cassette of oddfellows 1st anniversary where Gary Rushbrooke introduces it as the embers , playing the part of the fool before Stafford recorded feb 1983 , if anyone can help i would love to post it for everyone to listen to but have no idea how to ( have it in cd format). Also I have the acetate that keb had cut with the Delcos on the flip. Will dig it out and post a picture when I get time . Benji Posted July 10, 2022 Posted July 10, 2022 Royal Esquires one of the worst deals I ever made. Was offered a copy @500, bought it straight away thinking I got a real bargain. 4 weeks later the NOS copies flooded the market. Eventually turned out seller (well known DJ) knew about the NOS copies and tried to get rid of his copy before price would fall. Not mad about this but it still leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
