Hi all apologies if this has been covered before but I’m interested on peoples take on this type of records that have not been released in the uk officially until the legal licenced ones have come out( and yes I’m fully aware of the American pressings and there availability etc)

but in my mind because these are the first official legal copies in the uk they are 1st uk pressings

also point in fact is the UK tamla Motown  1971 black label or frank Wilson ( yes that tune 😂) and also the originals suspicion from the box set were the first uk pressings so there for original ( and the frank Wilson in my head hadn’t been pressed anywhere and released bar the original demos)

aldo the Horace and other Kent releases pied piper etc

so therefore all original uk first pressing and qualify as original issue pressings in the uk???

There are different of opinions on what constitutes an original UK release.

To me, if it was released around the time of the original recording or issued with a view to getting it into the UK commercial charts, it is an original.

If it was legally pressed many years after it was recorded and issued only for a specialist market like the Northern Soul scene it is not a proper UK release.

So to me, Frank Wilson on the first UK black label Tamla Motown release, was a long time after original recording but it was released in the hope of some commercial chart placing, and the general public, so it is an original UK release. You could of gone and bought it from your local record shop.

But the Pointer Sisters on Out-a-site was released for a specialist Northern Soul market and not intended for the general public and the commercial market, so to me it's not a UK original.

I suppose it is all a matter of your personal viewpoint on it.

That kind of makes sence to me about the mass market release and the fact there are many views all becomes blurred like most things in life when people get involved 😂 and opinions slightly differ

All released because of UK Northern demand and not contemporaneous releases with their US equivalent.....are you looking for approval to play these out ?

Not looking for approval I’ll play them if I wanna play them type thing

but looking to see what peoples opinions are on them being played out more than anything. I only look to myself for approval but take into consideration peoples opinions

if I were to be asked to play at at an original vinyl night I would perhaps think twice but then again I wouldn’t as they are to popular and with the Salvador’s and frank Wilson a bit cheese but would play if I was asked

I’m hedging my dj box more towards official vinyl only with mostly original where possible. So in the case of Alfie Davison I don’t have the £700 to buy a copy but I do have the SOS version but want a legit one to play out in places

Not being picky but the Frank Wilson 1170 was first released in 79 , about the same time of the first released Motown unreleased compilation ( the one with the Spinners on What More Could A Boy Ask For )  From The Vaults which also I'm sure came with a free copy of Kim Weston / Marvelettes as an added promotional carrot (as if we needed one .

My view for what is I don't think since Nosmo King and probably R Dean Taylor , has anyone ever released a Northern soul record on the hope of a chart success, the numbers don't stack up , so if on UK for for first release then yes original , if on the other hand countless reissues no chance .

And then on the other hand quite a few only available in the UK , I know Clarkie was buying up Frank Wilson on TMG 1170 back in the early 80s and selling them onto collectors in the states fact . And I bet quite a lot of Betty Boos went the same way .

you wouldn't Dj anywhere I promoted playing them

If you can't afford Salvadors or Alfie then play summat else, enough others got the real thing, no wonder this scene is regressing and has become stale and boring.

That’s totally my point Chalky I’ve got thousands of other records

so do I take it from that your offering me some gigs cause if so yes please.

I would play them at my nights if asked and the punters that come to gigs I play at do ask for all of the above and to be fair I’d far rather play a legit 1st issue release that cost me £20 than not play it.

however the amount of originals that I have far out ways any re issues they just might not be the big ticket stuff which in my mind is all well and good but there is a just as much if not more stuff out there that is affordable but I’d rather play a legit big ticket tracks if asked at a do around here if I haven’t got it on original and keep punters happy rather than playing a boot

and I would defo play stuff like Horace or first pressing kent or Harley at any do if they are first release
