Dave Thorley Posted May 17, 2007 Author Posted May 17, 2007 (edited) Found a few more Hi Chris A bit of help needed from other soulsourcers here. I believe there are 2 Cash McCalls. This is a guy that lives in Detroit, who could also be the guy that recorded some stuff in Chicago. But when I spoke to him, he said he never did or released anything in the south. But I have a few recordings, by a Cash McCall on southern lables ????? Willie 'Pop's' Mitchell is a real nice guy, but he has been very ill of late, having to go in and out of hospital. His studio is run, nowdays by his son's. Edited May 17, 2007 by Dave Thorley

Cash McCall well...i've got a few Thomas sides which i love..only info I have is that guy was with 'The Gospel Songbirds' real name Maurice Dollison. I believe he recorded on Checker 'We've come a long way together' 1216. I don't have that so can't compare unless John M has a soundclip. I played 'you can't take love' at Lowton on Friday..I think the guy is so underated!! On Columbia & Chess too. Edited May 17, 2007 by bearsoul

There is a COUNTRY artist named Cash McCall also, which might be the other person you're talking about.

Top Row : The Appollas ; Baby Washington ; The Blossoms 2nd Row : Danny White 3rd Row : Eddie & Ernie ; Jackie Day ; Roscoe Shelton 4th Row : The Vibrations Bottom : The Capitols Malc Burton That Baby Washington image is part of a much bigger picture, one that also has Chuck Jackson in it. It's not a publicity shot. I have the original print in my collection (signed by Baby!) Also, that's not Danny White of "Cracked Up Over You" and "One Little Lie" fame, it must be either the one who did "King For A Day" or, less likely, the one who covered Tina Charles' "Dance Little Lady Dance"... I'll post up the full pic of Baby and Chuck in the morning, if I think of it. And Malc I haven't forgotten your 'Boogaloo On Broadway' question. Well actually, I did, as I didn't see Terry for a couple of weeks, but I promise I'll ask him down the pub tonight

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Sorry, I got a bit confused about the Baby Washington photos - I do have the one with Chuck Jackson in it, and it's signed by Baby, but it looks like this: However I do also have the original print of the other one - also signed by Baby - and it looks like this: ...they ARE signed to me personally, even though it looks like she thinks my name is 'Sony'. I have to thank my pal John Marriott for organising the autographs, BTW...
Richard Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 I had some great watercolours done by a street artist in Bulgaria a couple of years ago of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles. They have pride of place in my front room.

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 The Chicago Cash McCall's real name is Maurice Dollison. I'm pretty sure that Maurice Dollison is one of many names that was used by the songwriter-producer Monk Higgins. Others I can immediately think of were Vee Pea and Milton Bland - which I think is his real one. Cash McCall isn't Monk Higgins, though. BTW I disagree with Dave's assessment of Willie Mitchell, who I found to be a cold and aloof person on both occasions that I met him at Royal Studios in the early 90s. However, William Brown of the Mad Lads, who was his engineer and studio manager then, was one of the nicest individuals I have ever enountered.

I was tempted to put it up on the 'tunes other people don't get' thread the other day as every other person i have played it too hasn't really liked it. I put it up on the refosoul thingy ages back, think i'll try & fish it out see if we can convert some others Mr Miles Grayson, band linup on other scan. rob h. Rob i reckon your scanner has got the 'blues' , has it been hanging out with Willie & Steve Aldridge ? they are enough to give anything the blues !

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 (edited) I'm pretty sure Maurice Dollison is Cash McCall and NOT Monk Higgins. You are quite right - I was mixing up my Dollison's. Mr. Higgins/Pea/Bland also wrote occasionally under the name of Jean Dollison. Happy to admit that I stand corrected, and to apologise for trying to muddy waters that didn't need muddying... Worth mentioning - althought it's a little 'off point' - that Cash/Maurice played guitar on a lot of late 60s Chess sessions, including those of Little Milton who, being a great picker himself, was probably the last person to need someone to do the work for him!
