Guest Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Does anybody remember John Grant playing ? I keep hearing about how good/ important he was in late 70's Manchester.
Citizen P Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 yes. Rufus about '78ish. bit of a daunting place for two skinny white lads , but the sounds were good. Tony
Dave Thorley Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Great Jazz Funk DJ, bought a bunch of his 12's when he gave up.
Cheapsiderecords Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Yes, Monday night at the Roundabout in Gloucester, Jazz Funk nights.
Guest Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Tony, what was Rufus like as a venue, was John the main DJ there ? I knew he played Rafters with Colin Curtis...
Guest highlander Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I remember john grant from cassinellis .friday nights in the late seventies playing alongside curtis. top guy and well respected. Also at rafters I wonder what he's up to ?
Modernsoulsucks Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 He did dabble in Northern at one time. I sold him a Tony Middleton for £40 when it was getting played as a "newie". I thought he'd gone off to be a lighthouse keeper. Not joking, that's what I heard. ROD
Guest Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 I'd heard he moved to the south coast to be a harbour master...and he was so well respected too.

Course you're relying on my memory..but Rufus was one of the incarnations of downstairs at Rowntrees Sound on Cross st. entered via Fennel St. typical 70s club I guess, coupla rooms dance floor in back. Think JG was the only DJ in there. I'm pretty sure he also did the Sunday Nights at The John Bull on Spring gardens which by coincidence was previously Rowntrees Spring Gardens ATB Tony
