Just noticed that on the Staple Singers Stax Album Phillip Mitchell Doesn't get the writing credits for 'Trippin' on your love' - credits go to Smith - Rice.  On the Kent single Mitchell is named as the writer as well as on the Kent CD Just the beginning.  Generally it is acknowledged that he wrote the track and recorded his version of it.  What happened with the album version?  I know writers often did not get credits for royalties etc but any info appreciated.

The originally released version is actually the below. Recorded in Muscle Shoals and released in 1976 by French Canadian soul group Boule Noire and credited to Thurston- Alves and Mitchell. Same musical backing / arrangement but different recording and lyrics (in Franglais!) I love it. The LP is did quite well in the French-speaking world and this track was b-side of a top 5 record in that part of Canada.

The Staple Singers version came out with a bunch of previously unreleased stuff early 80s (this 'Time Around' LP). They left Stax for Curtom 74 / 75. Suspect 'Tripping On Your Love' dates from just before that. Anyway, by the time that eventually came out, a publisher presumably already had claims to it based on the Boule Noire song...

Coincidentally, recently finished reading Rob Bowman's excellent book about Stax. This track isn't mentioned but whole operation ended in a hideously complicated legal mess (including the publishing division).

So there could be any number of reasons why the credits got changed...

Love the Staple Singers 'Trippin' so I gladly take any info relating to it's history and this cheesy Maple sirup relating version release I did not know about. Thanks for that.

Although unlike you I grew up in a mostly French speaking "culture" (Brussels) and always since a kid had a major aversion for the French singing "à l'americaine" and the "european" (French Canada is that a bit too for real) serious lack of better taste or knowhow trying to make anglo-american music genres with "vulgar" commercial arrangements & productions. Am being rather partial here but my resetment has always been that deep. And anyway 'Trippin' On Your Love' is such a stronghold tune in my heart in very way ; musicaly, vocaly & lyric wise. Any close things coming by should merely compete in vain to these ears.

Not sure I fully understand your reply. It's a black artist (Georges Thurston) from Quebec. Was recorded at Muscle Shoals.

I'm not suggesting it beats the Staple Singers classic but for my tastes, it's a good quality and enjoyable record in its own right and soulful. The LP is very decent too with one other track that would be a bit of a monster if recorded in English!

I've read Mavis fell in love with the song after hearing Phillip Mitchell's demo.

Is this his demo version of the song or something he made later? There's no info on you tube with the video.
