Does anyone out there know how to fix a centre hole that’s worn ?

As you can see from the picture the centre hole is about 2mm oversized & to make it worse it’s not the same distance all the way round so nudging in to place is hit and miss 

Can it be fixed without trashing the value of the record?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Could you just wrap some tape around the plastic centre you use to make it wider?

They are not expensive and would do the job

 

Alternatively cut a cardboard centre that fits in the record then add a spindle hole and play using that

I tried tape around the adapter, which was when I discovered that the hole is off centre as well as oversized 

I’ll try the card option, but I was really looking for a more permanent solution 

I’ve had this issue before. Dependent on the extent of the pressing error, I use a TINY strategically placed dot on the label right at the edge of the centre at the point where the label and the adapter touch, and place the record there. Fine if at home, not so after a few pints on the decks in a dimly lit club I must admit.

I haven’t played the track out for ages for that reason (even before lock downs). At home I just keep nudging the record until it’s right, although it has been known for me to get fed up & just play something else

I suppose the first thing to do is work out where the spindle should be before, then at least I’d know what part of the hole needs filling

I have used spiders before where they are either the 3 pronged one and a tight fit or the spiral type  which spring into place.

With the 3 pronged one fit said adaptor onto turn table and then centre the record with one of the prongs directly where there is a gap. Where there is a gap, fit a small piece of packing plastic to bridge the gap between prong and record. When you have desired thickness to fill the gap, glue said piece to the prong near the gap. With a plain label you can put a dot or two so you can easily relocate said adapted spider or mark the spider and line that up with something on the label.

With sprung spiral spider they are usually bigger than a standard hole , so centre record up on the deck, place sprung spider over spindle and trim each leg so it fits snugly into hole or not if one of the prongs is a fit where said gap is.

Found it in Mr Tees Kidderminster had to have it just for a project,didn't go through quality control that's for sure

Drill a piece of plastic with a hole cutter the same size, fit into offset hole and the find the centre of the record and redrill spindle hole...Simples

I'll go and get my plumbing bag , quiet night on the box 

Looks like with the options open to me I’m going to first have to figure out where the hole is oval, looks like an evening of drawing & measuring, although hopefully an off the shelf solution is out there

 

I think maybe cut a cardboard template of the existing hole,by scribing hole onto cardboard prior to cutting with craft knife, then drill hole to the exact centre , thick cardboard should do it , 

This looks like your copy,just copy whatever middle this chap used,it must have worked fine,cos there is no mention of it affecting play!

Ask a young person about how to get a bespoke widget measured and 3D printed for it. 

.... Maybe a standard spider design, but with one leg printed slightly longer.

I like that idea, especially as it means someone else doing the work 

Surely 3D printing is readily accessible and cheap

There are places that do it online. You send them the plan and then they 3D print it and post it to you.

Much cheaper if you know someone who's got a 3D printer apparently. 

I don't know the ins and outs (hence - ask a young person!) but on another forum I'm on, someone designed a 3D phone holder for a car. They then shared the design and people got them printed.

The black plastic spider adapter mentioned earlier has its merits - you would need to re-bore the spindle hole in the correct place.

I’ve cut metal triangles from USA solid metal adaptors to re-centre the records below. It takes a while to file out the plastic then glue in the triangle, but once the adaptor has been modified, the record plays fine.

This could be a very good public service , how much do you charge ? , I'm sure you could make a few quid and and a lot of friends too, great idea .

Thanks for the positive feedback. At first, I was reluctant to share the secret, but to hell with copyright - now you all know and can have a go yourselves. I’ve made five in all - my copies of Annabelle Fox and Dusty Wilson are off-centre - but it takes a good while, and then you have to use trial and error to position the adaptor in the spindle hole. The trouble is, you then need to keep the special adaptor for a specific record and handle it as though it was a British release. I do have a Tru Tones on Soulville (with matching custom adaptor) surplus to requirements so it might be put up for sale in the near future.
