I don't claim to know anything about the 'scene' as I have far too many other interests to claim 'Northern' alone as a way of life. But... perhaps power has been passed from the early days in which we relied on the DJ to serve up new soul sounds, to the new fangled internet age where everyone is a DJ and you don't need a venue to listen to/discover or to buy a soul tune. The crowd is all powerful.

I would argue to my last breath that there is a difference between 'listening' and really 'hearing' a tune and that there's a magic that happens when a record is 'heard' at a night.... That said - just like the pub scene and live bands - you stick a playlist/performance/podcast on the internet and might get 1000 listens...  perhaps ten times the attendance at the gig/night.

Heard two of Kitch's spots recently, hardly knew anything he played and all were top class.

Anyone wanting to hear something different should seek him out, although I don't think he DJ's that much..

Some should try the pavilion nice variety of music no politics nice people and beer 👍

Here's my take on it.......

Back in the day, Joe Bloggs, Fred Blogs, Arthur Bloggs & Terry Bloggs would be guaranteed 2 one hour slots at 2 nighters every weekend. So if Joe played a record twice in his first set & emptied the floor he could still play it again in his second set & repeat the same sets he had played again the next night at a different nighter. While Joe is doing this, Fred, Arthur & Terry are doing the same with their new exclusives. By week 3 people have caught on & we have four new floor fillers from four different DJs. Eddie Smith, Bobby Smith & Tony Smith have managed to get emi discs of these new floor fillers & are playing them mixed in with their usual Thursday night do's at Worcester, Bedford & Thirsk. A new monster sound is born & other tired records are dropped in its favour (probably booted anyway)

2021/22  We don't have the small amount of exclusive places we had in say 76 (Wigan, St Ives, Cleggy, Yate) but we have far more venues & far more DJs. There is no way a newie can get broken as before because the DJs know an empty floor will mean they aint coming back any time soon, let alone being given 2 spots a night to prove their new record is the mutts nuts !....So instead of playing unknown Johnny Sharp Shirt they will play a 2 or 3 k record that will fill the floor (self preservation), & stick Johnny Sharp Shirt on in the car on the way home with their mates to enjoy.

Just my thoughts....Tell me if I'm wrong, but just bare in mind ther are plenty of £2 - £20 records on here, discogs, ebay etc That would fill floors everywhere if played consistently for a month or so - So why else arent they being aired?

What a great post! 🙏

Cheers,

Scrolling through some files on the computer, I found a set of playlists from our last Amsterdam rare soul weekender, which was in 2019. Guest DJs included Dave Thorley, Mick H, Kitch, and a host of others with big hitting playlists classics, rarities and unknowns.

But, my point in posting the playlists below is to show the diversity of sounds that can be heard in mainland Europe (well, Amsterdam at least) from DJs you might not have heard spin before. Of course there are plenty of familiar sounds, but the point is there's - to my mind - a brilliant mix of stuff from dance floor faves to lesser played tunes and a good number of one-offs. That, to me, represents progressiveness. But maybe you'll think otherwise.

There are many great new and previous unissued nowadays but I have only heard them on podcasts and not many at all at venues,I bet you could do a great  night just using such records with a few lesser played originals .But the problem is would you get enough punters through the doors.

Sadly you wouldn't get anyone dancing, I did it with some of the unissued stuff and people at a 'normal' night aren't interested. Then again it is quite nice being young and having all these wonderful 80/90's '6Ts newies' which are all still new to me, so I can listen and enjoy like people did before me. But I do get that people have heard enough of these tunes to last 3 lifetimes. Maybe it's more a question of taking a break, as the system isn't going to change anytime soon. And come back in 5 years when the party style crowd have burnt out, and venues are filled with people who want more new Northern.

I admit I may not be the best qualified to comment on this thread as I haven't attended any venues of any description for years, but can anyone seriously point to any discoveries from the past twenty years that are commercially on par with a Tomangoes, Morris Chestnut, Epitome of Sound etc?  Anything that would make the Top 500 if it were being compiled today?

There is no solution to this , the only way going forward is that if various venues have a second room, they stipulate that everything played should be fresh new discoveries, underplayed but that is only relevant to the people listening and what they have heard before, The old top 500 is probably in fact an old top 5000 these days. The age factor comes into play again how many Soul lovers have the energy these days to push the agenda and suffer a financial loss to promote this. It’s a sad situation for all the real hardcore Soul fanatics who still want to dig deeper, I wish there was a solution to it but the way the soul scene sits at present I think the second room is the only hope.
