Excluding reissues and things like Headline News that weren't really Motown records, what do you reckon the topten TMG B sides are-ones that really should have been on the other side? Pretty tough but mine are:

1 TMG564B Contours-Just A Little Misunderstanding

2 TMG652B Isleys-Why When Love Is Gone

3 TMG646B Edwin Starr-My Weakness Is You

4 TMG789B Undisputed Truth-You Got The Love I Need

5 TMG698B Four Tops-Don't Bring Back Memories

6 TMG864B Gladys Knight-No One Could Love You More

7 TMG535B Marvelettes-Your Cheating Ways

8 TMG725B Edwin Starr-Running Back And Forth

9 TMG636B Martha Reeves-Show Me The Way To Your Heart

10 TMG692B Edwin Starr-If My Heart Could Tell The Story

I think Edwin was a bit harshly done by really. I know War charted but He Who Picks A Rose is better and that's on the B side!

Always thought they got off to a great start:

TMG501B The Supremes - I'm In Love Again.

Just a personal favourite.

Four Tops-Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind is probably number 11 on the list! Unbelievable that such a classy side was just hidden away.

If you move away from Northern-style tunes TMG602B Stevie Wonder-Hey Love and TMG707B The Temptations-Why Did She Have To Leave are brilliant.

Bob move back to the Northern-style TMG 616B "going down for the third time" D R & the Supremes, then move away toTMG 771B "stay in my lonely arms" the Elgins now that was played down the Cross Keys a few times!

Oh yes! I've gone wild over this in recent years - despite having it since I was 15/16 (a long, LONG time ago!)

It slipped my memory for years but has now become my favourite Supremes song of all!

Another one I picked up on was Marvin Gaye's "When I Had A Love" and Jimmy Ruffin's great version of "Everybody Needs Love", both songs that I'd had lying around for donkey's years in my Tamla Motown box... Highly recommended sides.

I once read that Ian Levine quoted this as THE side that awoke him to the potential of the "Crossover" concept, ie. late sixties sides that have characteristics of forthcoming Seventies production values. Way ahead of it's time, and still sounding great today. It really should have been played out, somewhere, sometime.

All available on a very fabulous CD series called Soul Satisfaction Vols 2-5  The theme of the CDs is forgotten B sides and album tracks in chronological order... :D Soul Satisfaction 6 is coming along nicely...if I told you what was on it, I'd have to kill you all... :shades: All will be revealed in due course  Jo

Hmmm...a spot of nothing but Motown B sides and album-only tracks? Shorty Long-Baby Come On Home to Me, Marvelettes-Your Love Can Save Me, Monitors-Share A Little Love, Marvin Gaye-Only A Lonely Man Would Know...where to start?

From the moment I started collecting in 1968 I've always played both sides of a record but overlooked some stuff at the time, probably because it wasn't fast enough. The added bonus is of course your taste does change a bit - Stevie Wonder - "I'd be a fool right now" is a prime example.

Great thread

I agree with all the above and here's some more

TMG555 Isley Brothers - There's no love left - also a good version by the Four Tops

TMG557 Temptations - Fading Away

TMG 571 Jnr Walker - Nothing but soul

TMG894 - Jnr Walker - I ain't going nowhere

TMG 578 Temptations You're not an ordinary girl

TMG608 Brenda Holloway - Starting the hurt all over again

TMG 626 - Stevie Wonder - Every time I see you I go wild

TMG717 - Stevie Wonder - I'd be a fool right now

TMG725 - Edwin Starr - Running Back & Forth

TMG875 - Edwin Starr - Love the lonely peoples prayer

TMG729 - Chuck Jackson - What am I gonna do without your love

TMG584 - Miracles - Save me

TMG1093 - David Ruffin - Rode by the place we used to stay

Barbara Randolph......You,ve got me hurtin all over. from the first time i heard this i thought it was the tops, searched all over at the time to get other records by her only to fail.

Two album-only tracks that should have been on 45,

Temps "save my love for a rainy day" TML11057 67

Marvin & Tammi "memory chest" TML11084 68

I still think the Temps is the best version of "save my love" probable the first version i had the pleasure of listening to,

Also this song was writen by Winnona Singleton aka Gordy, the song was recorded by a shrine artist and later Disco Covers by some groups, wonder why Eddie Singleton never pushed and promoted this type of sound, love this song and the lyrics,it must have driven Berry Gordy mad to give an exwife royalties for the Four Topscut.

Seeing as it was a Ric-Tic recording before Berry Gordy bought Golden World and it wasn't a UK TMG issue, I'd say so.
