Year Of Release Not Stated

Sometimes when I buy a record the year of release is not stated, and I will have to trawl the Internet in search for that info.

Personally, if I were to publish a book or release a record, I would most certainly state the year of publication/release. For me that would be all natural.

So how come that on many records the year is not stated? Possible reasons:

1. The record company didn´t consider it essential information.

2. Everybody buys the record new and knows what year it is when they buy it.

3. They want to make the record timeless. With no year stated the record will not be considered old unless the music sounds dated. Otherwise, if you put out a record in Dec 1972 it will appear one year old after only one month.

Infuriates me too! Only on USA (and European) 45s though do they do this.

All UK issues have the release date, us Brits don't mess about!

There is a way to find the year of release by the 'Delta' numbers scratched in the run out grooves. John Manship has a table in one of his guide books.

If it's a Delta number then with the chart you can near enough find the Month.

Some of the others can be a bit trickier Another source is ANORAKS CORNER

It would have helped if they had just put the year on the label.

Motown did on most of there's, but usually had date of release and re-issue.

The Cameo Label is awkward as they either state 1960 or 1962 on releases that are obviously later.

I reckon that they may have printed far too many Label Blanks and just used them up.

sort of - the copyright year on some labels under the logo is the year of the logo AFAIK, e.g. Cameo, Jewel, One-Der-Ful, etc,
