Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Taking the grandaughters to California in early April, we're staying in the Fishermans Wharf area of San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Anaheim. Any suggestions for record shops with a reasonable soul selection in those locations gratefully received. Also any suggestions for what radio stations to tune the car radio into for some soul cruising music whilst heading south along 101 Thanx, Dave

They are the ones who got in on the huge lot that John Manship and others were part of. He still has lots of the lesser titles for pretty good prices. Although the owner is a asshole.

"Although the owner is a asshole." how dare you say that about a personal friend of mine..he has his faults but overall.......yeh..... he's an asshole.
Guest Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 There more places in California to buy records than you can shake a stick at... I've never failed in that state in fact the last two times I was there were the two best finding trips I've had in the many years. Santa Barbara has a shop but owner again is a little "different" but I've found good stuff there if you are prepared to dig. If your going up route ONE, there's two shops in San Luis Obispo again if you hit it right..there could be some surprises there. If in L.A. Mike Vague is worth a call. In San Francisco Justin Torres is the man.. San Franciso..Rookie's & Jack Record Cellar have loads of 45s..best record shop in the world is over the bridge in Mill Valley. San Jose has a good shop, Redwood City has another shop, again the owner is a little "different" In Oakland, as been said before has Saturn Records.. you could find some sleepers there, I'm still opening boxes from that load..so he'll have something for sure. I was in Sacremento a few weeks back, went for lunch in the Old Town came out went into a "Antique store" opposite..and found over £1000 worth of great Northern Soul for $50 Just get looking it's fun, it's my favourite state to visit.. and so many records were made there... you'll always find something if you take the time, if you don't find much you'll still have agreat time looking.. good luck.
Guest jinx74 Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 In San Francisco Justin Torres is the man.. stop.. im blushing! all the info john gave is pretty much what i would suggest too. if you need places to eat, look for records (dealers or stores), or get lost and need some advice, get in touch with me at my email... vinylarc@hotmail.com ...before you come out and ill give you more info. Im in SF but have wide knowledge of the whole bay area. after you pass fresno on the way to LA mike vague can tip you on where to go after that...
Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Thanx for the information, I'm sure that I'll find something to do while the ladies are on the beach. Once again many thanx, Dave
