I sometimes think people think i am hijacking the whole Forum - I am really not I promise i just ALWAYS seem to have a question, there are millions i haven't actually asked yet.

I am going to get myself a Barbara Mercer, i have tried not to but i am now giving in.

I understand the Sidra is different from the Capitol (strings), but.................................................................There seems to also be another version which has cropped up here and there with the vocals continuing where in the normal versions the violins cut in (about half way), it also seems to have a bit more of a strong beat to it - Is this my imagination or is there anothe 3rd version? If so, which actual record is this on?

HUGE Thanks again, i promise i appreciate ALL feedback and i wont ask any more questions for at least a week?

On the Sidra appearance kind of thing I had the green stocker first which seemed to me totally similar to the white demo 'upgrade' I got after. Have not got try to compare the matrix 😉

The Capitol release is not only different in regard of the strings (cut out), it's also altogether a plain an simple take. Now I can't say much better for another release out there.

But there's an unreleased (seemingly) previous cut, demo or acetate variation out there on YT (like here). With "hum" throat rimming for intro... Taken from what source I can't say.

Yes, That's the one :) thanks for posting it! - How strange. I shall call it "clearing the throat version"

OK, so maybe its not a released version then - because i cant seem to find any other versions on vinyl. Cant be a remix because of the added vocal either?

Thankyou

I think I have that “ throat clearing “ version  on a CD ,possibly Gold Soul ? I think it must be an unissued out take .

I think, that the CD Eddie is referring to is actually "The Sound of Sidra", an outta sight soul essentials-"The Detroit Sound" and the release no. is OSCD011, and Barbara Mercer outtake version is track #8....

The "throat clearing" version rings a bill. I remember it from many many years ago. Way before the Outtasight CD release. Either I had it on mp3 back then or its on the Totally Solid Hitbound (Goldmine) or Northern Soul Years (Joeboy) CD compilation. Sadly I no longer own them. Can anyone confirm it's on one of them or even both?

Benji, it is definitely on the Totally Solid Hitbound, track 21 as I've just checked, alas my only CD player is in my car, so can't confirm whether it is the out-take or not, but good shout regardless!

I wouldn't be surprised if the alt take is on all three CD compilations. It happened before that one UK label released a alt take from the master tape and "by miracle" same take appeared again on other compilations.

Thanks Benji, Yes i love that "off the cuff" version - something we were not meant to hear :)

I prefer the first released take, the Sidra one. As it happens there's a lovely white demo of said tune spinning on my turntable while I type 😀, great double-sider.

A couple of takes of the instrumental turned up on one of the Reel-to-Reel tapes from Don Davis that carolinasoul auctioned earlier in the year  or maybe last year. They were slightly different to each other, but both recorded at a much faster tempo. It's possible the tape was playing too fast, but unlikely that carolinasoul got that wrong. Don't know if it went to anyone we could ask?
