Having been off the "scene" for quite a while now even pre-lockdown I find myself aghast at the prices some records are selling for. In spite of having the latest JM's price guide etc which to be honest bears no correlation to the actual price of a record these days I see records selling for silly money even ones I thought were maybe £40-£50 going for 100's. I have been considering selling up for quite a while now and bearing in mind it's no small collection who can I trust to give me a true valuation? My partner has no idea about soul music and although he knows the records are worth something he really hasn't got a scooby. I have terrible visions of my records in a charity shop with some lucky soulie saying f**k me 50p each !! I dread the idea of cherry pickers trawling through it and simply do not have the time to put up endless sales lists ( even if I knew what they were actually worth)...Some guidance would be much appreciated...

If you are selling via a dealer then their commission can take at least 20 percent of good priced items up to 50 percent of cheapies,  ebay and PayPal will be about 15 percent so if you can find someone to sell them it is only really 5 percent difference

I was offered between 35 and 60 percent of value when I wanted to move a few on a couple of years ago.

Pete Smith and Des Parker are 2 dealers I have bought from and would recommend them

Ebay is cheap to sell on now! Only sell when you get the “one pound” seller fees promotion, which is often when you start listing regularly, ebay now pay direct into your bank account so NO paypal fees!

however if you dont want the hassle of selling, drip feed handfuls at a time to derek mead at soulmine! He sells online and at events, aswell as his 2 record shops “soulmine” and “beatin rythym”He still does the old fashioned way of posting a list with a cd too, which helps to sell the cheap and lesser knowns!

I remember you selling regularly some tasty records now and again on here surely you ain’t that out o touch?? Didn’t you auction the odd one ? Pretty sure I won one going back 13 years though lol , for that particular one , can’t remember what it was but was only about 6 in the U.K. back then can’t think for the life of me what it was

Trust yourself. You know the score. Monitor the sales databases eg Popsike, Collectors Frenzy etc then go for a Set Sale on Soul Source. Manship’s auctions indicate maximum global auction figures, so don’t expect to achieve similar prices. Sell direct in the UK, cut out the middleman, maximise returns for your treasured records. Put the cheaper stuff on eBay. There are several trustworthy dealers who will sell on your behalf for a fee, but do you want to lose 10-20% of the transaction value? The market for high-end records is booming, so sit tight and watch your vinyl-investment appreciate.

That's the trouble really apart from the obvious oldies my taste is somewhat left field I bought records nobody wanted at the time. 8 years roughly I have been off the scene and that's a fair old time out of the loop so to speak. I don't set any score by JM's auctions my only guide has been sales lists here on SS or Ebay. The last set sales list I put on here sold in seconds which would suggest to me they were too cheap lol. I just need somebody to bring me up to date with valuations to be honest.

I’m pretty sure there’s a rare soul valuations, or similar, Facebook group where you can ask about current values ... that might provide pretty quick and sensible guidance

I think if you list a record on ebay, it will tell you an expected sale price based on previous sales of the same record?

Might be worth experimenting with one or two sales on there first to see if you do well.

Anything worth a grand or more...selling via Johnny Manship and his colourful language may still get you the grand etc even after his commission.

As with everything in life, knowledge is power, or in this case, pound notes, figuratively speaking.

Instead of going to a dealer, why not go on Facebook and join the group selling "Northern Soul" and ask for values.

It seems that's what a lot do now to sell their records (by asking for values and selling)

It really depends on the size and potential value of your collection. If its large and has some rare and in demand pieces and could fetch multiple thousands of pounds, then many of the smaller dealers will probably not be able to shell out that kind of money in one go. Therefore it leaves the bigger dealers as the best bet such as JM and Tim Brown. Be careful about selling via dealers on a commission basis i.e. your records are on consignment and you have to wait for them to sell via the dealer to get your cash....could be years.

No dealer will want to take a collection that's been cherry picked, so don't be tempted to sell off some tasty bits before letting it go.

Alternatively my experience is that every record will sell provided you pitch the price right. If you auction off the rarer stuff via Ebay, Facebook groups, SS etc, and then put up the 'normal records' on SS or Facebook groups they will sell. But please don't do what some do and pitch it at "book price" or because Popsike says somebody has paid 100 for it, but every other sale is 20. You'll be holding the records for a long time. Price sensibly and they are gone.

Remember big dealers and Ebay will give you global reach for sales.
