La Reine La Mar – That’s not the way to love – Capitol 72322 M- £450 SOLD

The exotically named La Reine La Mar is yet another enigma of the Northern soul scene, a common example of a one non-hit wonder. Given this young lady’s résumé I am surprised she hasn’t recorded more. From the off, she demonstrates the intellect, style, talent and stamina required to forge a singing career but also go on to run the whole damn business. By day this 60s super heroine is a qualified Physiologist and Biochemist, by night a winner of beauty pageants and promising local singer, and in her spare time an accomplished competition swimmer and runner. The only comparison I have encountered with such a glowing CV beyond the music industry is our learned friend Hayes Cotton. And quite literally there’s even more strings to the bow, being a competent musician on piano, clarinet and guitar.

As far as her short lived recording career goes, its possible that the lack of success around the release of the New York based Cloud 45 in 1965, hosting “That’s not the way to love” as the official B side may have deterred her from pursuing solo success because she later appears in a mixed choir who were also recorded in New Jersey and active in live settings. Cloud 503 has been collectable for some time, but the Canadian Capitol release has remained nearly unknown and definitely under the radar with only a small number of copies coming to market over the intervening 55 or so years. Marion Stewart was a benefactor of the fabulous backing track, using it as the platform for “I must be losing you” on the “R” label, which was actually WAMS in Wilmington Wax to Watch in July 1967, a reminder of how localised these releases actually were.

Prime mint minus condition on vinyl and labels, and so very rare, attractive and elusive even to Canadian label collectors on this format.
