Here’s another tasty set of Northern tunes up for grabs, a bit of rarer, semi-knowns and oldies.

Sound files and additional images available if you want. PM and questions or to reserve.

Everyday People – World full of people – Brownstone 5000 M- £1000

(Funky edged group Soul recorded in 75 for Bill Browns Hollywood based Brownstone label.  This was reportedly released against the “advice” of the Mafia who were stamping out competition for their own record labels that no doubt fronted the rackets behind them.  Whether it was something against Brown, one of his team or the threat of some excellent mid 70s music it’s not certain, but I’m guessing that mob rule and the proposition of a one-way trip to the bottom of the ocean in concrete slippers may have had some affect on local pressing plant staff and distributors adding to its obvious scarcity and lack of releases on the label!  Brown was performing himself in 74, releasing “Bip bam” on the Accent label where he recorded with Soul Injection of “Stay off the moon” fame.  Audibly and visually M- with a slight dish to it that plays through without any effect on play)

Ultimates – Girl I’ve been trying to tell you – Br-roma 101 Ex+ £500 SOLD

(Formerly the Enchanted Five on CVS.  They recorded this track in New York under arrangements that lacked any form of management control culminating in the artists staying in town for three or four days, completing a session of tracks, which appeared on their later album titled ”You’re my lady” and when that was done they upped sticks and left, never to be heard of again.  A simple story likely to be true of many Northern groups?  A beautiful example of a 70’s crossover dancer coupled with a smoozy mid-tempo sweet soul winner, and the only thing to report is a very mild edge lift and light ring wear, otherwise it’s a fantastic slab of vinyl)

Rhetta Hughes – One in a million – Columbia 44073 WD M- £50 SOLD

(Fabulous version of Maxine Brown’s track, reminds me of how Freda Payne made OC Smiths “On easy street” her own, which is what Rhetta’s done here.  Lovely copy)

Meditations – It’s wrong to fight – Checker 1176 DJ Ex £75

(Hopefully, I’m not barking up the wrong tree, but this Gospel group fronted by the Reverend James Cleveland is backed in part by Laura Lee and Della Reese no less.  Single sided DJ copy with a couple of light pops on run out)

Jimmy Conwell – To much – Gemini 1003 EX+ £175 SOLD

(The usual sprinkling of Leonard Jewell-Smith, Hank (Sir) Graham Godoy Colbert on the credits for this one for another masterclass on the Gemini label.  Light ring wear and what looks like 50¢ in blue biro on the label, wow a bargain even then!)

Bobby Hill – To the bitter end / Tell me you love me – Lo Lo 2307 Promo Ex+ £550 SOLD

(There’s some class acts on this Calla distributed label, but none more compelling than this extraordinary double sider, which sports an early Blackpool Mecca play in the “Bitter end” and as tastes changed the now very sought-after crossover flip “Tell me”.  It always amazes me how some artists can switch effortlessly between gruff and ludicrously slick, and that girly intro is to die for on the flip.  Light label wear but the important thing is they play like a treat at Ex+)

Fred Martin Review – Take me back again / I know its going to happen – Ru-Jac 9170 M- £150 SOLD

(One of Manship’s Minters, a beautiful ballad flipped with up-tempo dancer on this alluring green Baltimore imprint)
