A cool stack of soul winners up for grabs today, many well established, couple of real rarities including one under the radar.  Sound files and additional images available if you want. PM and questions or to reserve.

Thelma Houston – Baby mine – Capitol 5767 WD Ex- £200 SOLD

(Infectious dancer. Couple of light scuffs, no affect play, in fact plays great at Ex+, some label wear)

Earl Wright – Thumb a ride – Capitol 5516 Ex+ £125 SOLD

(Classic instrumental)

Bobby Paris – I walked away – Capitol 5929 Promo M- £500 SOLD

(Fabulous copy, and so atmospheric I’ll even chuck in the hairs standing up on the back of your neck for free!)

Jean Battle – I’ve got to come in – Clintone 004 Ex+ £120 SOLD

(Femme crossover gem from Cliff Moons Birmingham, Alabama label. Mild ring wear on label)

James Bounty – Prove yourself a lady – Compass WD Ex+ £350 SOLD

(Instantly recognisable intro on this 60’s pounder. ‘R’ (Rockaway, New Jersey) machine stamped original, sticker residue on flip label)

Ritchie Adams – I can't escape from you – Congress 256 WD Ex £750 SOLD

(Never been so popular, well sought after. Some label ageing, date stamp on flip but playback is M-)

Moses Smith – Girl across the street – Dionn WD M- £350 SOLD

(All time Philly classic on the more select WD. Date stamp on label)

Soul for Sale – Let me love you – Geronimo 868 M- £1500 SOLD

(I hate not being able to share some information about a 45 and its origins, but this one has me stumped. Outstanding crossover that is clearly a one off for the group and probably the label. From the off the casual but discerning horn intro sets the scene for this mellow crossover groover to float along on a sea of calmness where distress is an ocean away. I’ve only ever seen reference or sales of this that I can count on one hand, rare to say the least, under the radar for most and destined for so much more with the right DJ behind it)

Jackie Edwards – I feel so bad – Island 3006 Ex+ £650 SOLD

(Call me biased but this track holds so many memories for me, its immense and my absolute favourite. I do recollect sailing around the Caribbean in the late 80s naughtily blaring it out on marine VHF airwaves simply to allow anyone bobbing around out there to immerse themselves in its beauty. Thankfully it’s a sparesy, with only innocuous handwritten “Fantasia DJ Steve Frost” on label, and a very tiny tiny sticker “231” to call it 100% clean. Centre intact)

Patti & Emblems – I’m gonna love you a long long time – Kapp Ex £500 SOLD

(Awesome group out of Camden, New Jersey led by Patty Russell on the deeply reliable and soul filled Kapp label. Looks M- but i did detect static on run in, don’t think its cue burn, but if lined up on first bar it plays lovely thereafter)

Fi-Dels - Try a little harder – Keymen 106 M- £300 SOLD

(An anthem from this talented group formed in the US Marine Corps and who also brought us another Los Angles winner in “ I’m giving you notice baby” on the Dore label)

Nat Hall - Why - Loop M- £2000 SOLD

(The Gama half of Lilian Clairborne’s Gama / Loop pairing sports several obscure Northern tracks, Billy Clark, Richie Kay, a rare Doc & Interns also on the Now label, but less is known of the Loop half that intertwines with its sister labels numbering. What we can be sure of is, the stand out release from this Washington DC outfit is Nat Hall’s rarity, the psychedelically soulful “Why” with its piercing horns and guitar riffs is outstanding and the flips not half bad either. I sold a M- copy in 2018 for the same price, no inflation here, and quite a gesture given that it won’t come to market again any time soon. Date and local catalogue number written on label, not distracting, just provenance)

Fabulettes – The bigger they are – Monument 901 DJ M- £75

(Nashville label with plenty of soulful output. Lovely girly dancer, almost dreamy, but a finger popper, seen at 100 recently)

IMG_E0458.thumb.JPG.7c7a47b8319c9a24ab7ca04cf8d48dbf.JPG

Freddie North - The hurt - RIC Ex+ £250 SOLD

(Almost Jackie Wilsonesque, the super talented brassy voiced Freddie delivers on this cool mover, on the rarer gold Recording Industries Corp label operated by Luther Vanadore out of in Nashville. Same stable as the more prolific Roosevelt Grier who gave us “In my tenement”)

IMG_E0583.thumb.JPG.54189c4a988eca42d28a41c140bb72cb.JPG

Diamond Joe – Wait a minute baby / How to pick a winner – Sansu 454 WD Ex+ £40

(A fabulous pair of palatable R&B tunes. For mains we have “Wait”, a piercing church choir style backing intro, shimmering tambourines, deep moaning guitar and belting horn fanfares, absolutely brilliant, but that’s not it, oh no, flip it over for dessert, “Winner” a lowdown bluesy smoozer, trumpet nipping in and out of short piano riffs, all following that mazy vocal journey, winding its way through this smoky R&B cabaret…. superb)

sorry ... but I just have to say that now. I hope I do not get trouble from the admin because I comment on a sales post ... 🍻

I think it's super awesome how you promote your sales and the associated background info.

Very very good read - already some interesting news for me.

Thx

Zanetti
