Professionals first play

Just heard RS, spin this on a torch and catacombs special, I'd assumed late Wigan, or possibly Levine, but not played a lot, at the mecca. 

So when was this class northern outing first spun and by whom? Is Richard not sticking to his personally defined playlist, which is fine, or was this an early find, on the the scene?

I certainly remember it getting played at Wigan .It was also  on that bootleg LP with the black and white city skyline as the album cover. 1 side was 70,s and the other rare northern . Still got it somewhere

Definitely a Catacombs record as Blue Max used to tell me on many occasions when I visited his shop.

I'm sure Pep & Neil Ruston would confirm this but I'm not sure who played it first, probably Neil.

My copy came from Neil Ruston at Stafford Top Of The World in 1984.

I have a tape from Simon Soussan which has this on. Dates from around 1974

I played this at Cleethorpes Pier along side things like Mat Lucas (around '75) but was i the first, i suspect not i just had them early doors if you get my drift, always a difficult question to answer because when purchasing rare stuff like this off John at soul Bowl ( Groove City/Lynns Discory) Tim or Pat Etc here's the thing, if like me you were running your own Local event you were probably playing tracks a while before you played them at a Major Niter or Dayer etc and if John had only a couple or more copies of a Potential future Rare Monster out of those hand full of lucky DJs who purchased them Actually played it first is a very good Question........

Blue Max @ Catacombs, it would have been between 1971 and 1973.
There's a lovely photo of Max and Steve Calloway with the record. They became instant friends after Steve came over, Max showed him the English way of life, taking him to cricket, fishing and for a curry etc.
H. Chalky tells a great tale about when he first took SC into Max's record shop and introduced them to each other, along the lines of " this is the man who first played your record Steve" followed by "and this is the man that sings it Max".
I hasten to add that despite Max persevering with it he eventually moved it on and the copy he had in the later years of his life was a different copy.

Thanks, for that. very much a quality, early exclusive for wolvo.

I'm assuming it didn't go massive at that time, although it's a known first play. When did it become a big sound then? Not aware of a wigan boot, so did it get more plays later, at Stafford then?

The only boot I'm aware of is the LP of let's say dubious origins. Was definitely a big tune in the main room at the Casino, 79 ish? really can't remember the year.

79, so Perhaps it got big after the hayday of booting, at least in 7 inch format.

Thats a good shout regarding the 7" boot format.

I wish I could find the LP . 

PS. It's a fantastic LP by the way with some great tracks on it. 

There must be someone on here that's got the LP to hand for the tracks

Yes mate, I think Sam & Richard were playing it as a newie at the same time. I heard Sam play it at the Fleet one week & Richard at Wigan the next, (or the other way round)

Roy Dawson covered up as James Mack and the Chicago Gangsters if I remember correctly.

I bought the All Nite Long boot when it was first knocking about for a tenner I seem to remember, still got it somewhere.

I wonder what the collective amount of cash the tunes on the album would fetch in their original form today.

A truly mind boggling sum I'm sure.

Sure someone on here would have a good idea.

Rob. I sort of said the same thing in my earlier post.  You would certainly need deep pockets. Only tough one I had off the LP was the Seven Souls. Okeh issue.

I am lucky enough to have 3 off the modern side, Cheryl Berdell, Charles Johnson and Tyrone Barkley.

Would really love to own a Court Davis and John and the Weirdest, 2 of my all time 6ts favourites.

Brad Hales sold an acetate a few years ago with an alt take on it.  Did one go through one of the auctions houses recently too?

Just remembered think it was JM who auctioned the orange vinyl copy.

Rob i forgot about the 70,s side . Got the Cheryl  Berdell and the Tyrone Barkley non of the others though,  had the Otis Clay at one stage.  Some great stuff.

Can't really remember where I got it to be honest but surprised I got it home at all if I came home from Wigan with it in your car mate.

In fact surprised I got there to buy it.
