M12 OKEH Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Lived at Priorslee from 84 til about 90. Anyone remember the monthly nites at Shifnal Village Hall? Still got my 'Catch a Groove' membership. Looking back through the topic, might have been run by Ian Carvell. Also used to got some of Esher's nites, including a Niter at the Court Centre, Madeley - was it the 84 / 86 Club? Think he also did a brilliant night at a village hall nearer Stourbridge - Worston?? There were also nites down at a pub in Ironbridge - think it was the Malthouse.
Guest Dirk Tiggler Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Thought the 86 club was at Shifnal? always chocker Eshers do! and a laugh used to come up with Paul Nobles, Rich Gough and a few others from Gloucester, Wogger and Wardie from Stroud as well, Wasn´t there a soul night in(or near) Crewe Fridays? round about the same time,in a disco type place mirrors everywhere and different bars, done a few guest spots in the area myself late eighties. Steve Hello Steve, the 86 club first started at Swancote country club on the Wolves / B'north road. Ran really sucessfully for about 2 years before moving to the Nautical William on the Kidderminster / Wolves road. (the West Midland soul club used to have do's there a few years before) This is where they started getting live acts over:- Ronnie McNair & Eddie Holman I remember. I then believe it moved to a tiny little village called Willey before moving again to the Malt House in Ironbridge. It then ended up returning to Swancote, where it all started, but now in a refurbished room. The best years were certainly the in first 3 years, getting a brilliant write up in Blues & Soul. I got to hear about it when it was advertised on Dave Evisons radio show on BBC Stoke & during the time it ran, my wife & I missed only one or two at the most. Shame it ended up with 15 to 20 people attending at the end but some of my best memories associated with soul music come from the early days. Ade
Tivoli Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Hello Steve, the 86 club first started at Swancote country club on the Wolves / B'north road. Hi, Esher first started the 86 club in a pub in Bridgenorth which moved then to a club in Dawley, before moving on to the Swancote Country club aka the Sweat Box. Loved the nights there - it was like coming home every time for me. John Venn/ Esher did a few nights in the Buttermarket in shrewsbury & also had input into the allnighter held in Oakengates. John also dj'ed in the original Yate line up with the Inter City Soul Club set up, & , many of the Soulies at Stafford will remember him dj'ing towards the end of each of the nighters there. Like a lot of the young soulies in Shropshire John attended the nights at Terry Heath's in Wellington. I actually promoted the 86 club way down in Westward Hoe during 1987!!! God i'm showing my age !!! Tiv Keep the faith & keep on keeping on.

Steve Steve If my memory serves me right, didn't the wheel come off Paul Nobles car on the motorway on the way back from seeing Ronnie McNeir. It was a great night, Ronnie was brilliant and thankfully everyone survived the experience. Mark

Loved the nights there - it was like coming home every time for me. Tiv Hello Tiv, Didn't realise that the beginings preceded Swancote so that's interesting to know. I'd also forgot it was known as the sweat box as well. I do remember the flyers though where Esher printed something like " No addmission after 10.00 pm, if you arrive after then you're Williams Watson" ie too late Ade
Tivoli Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Hello Tiv, I do remember the flyers though where Esher printed something like " No addmission after 10.00 pm, if you arrive after then you're Williams Watson" ie too late Ade Hi Ade, I still have a lot of these flyers; Billed as "The greatest little soul club in the land". Remember someone spilling beer on the dance floor at Dawley, & me going for a piss-baller. Nursed a broken arm for weeks afterwards!!! Tiv. Keep the faith & keep on keeping on.

M12 OKEH Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Looking for a photo of a mate who died 3 weeks ago and found these from Shropshire.
Spook Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Hi, I only lived in Telford for 6 years between 1997 and 2003 but I worked there for 37 years and my wife Janice (born in Telford) were regular attendees at Ian and Annes Shifnal Soul Night and at John's (Esher) 86 club. In the early 70's I occasionally ventured to the 7 Stars (Ketly), Terry Heaths and there was a pub somewhere in Wellington but I cannot remember its name (getting on a bit now), buying the odd US 45 from ADC in Tan bank (?). I was resident DJ (not very good) with Wit (we also supplied decks & PA for a long time) at the 86 Club at both Bridgenorth (sweatbox) and the Naughty Will. I also Dj'd for Ian at Shifnal, unfortunately I only have the two fliers (attached) left for the 86 Club, somewhere I have a Shifnal flyer but cannot put my hands on it at the moment. I used to attend Shifnal with Janice, Wit and his then wife Beverly (whitchurch), Tony Haftwoyac (TC) and his wife Barbara (Telford) and first meet Nigel Brown (Stafford) and Andy Peake (Wolverhampton) down there. I know Phil & Joy used to attend both venues, I met them earlier at the Raven (Prees Heath) 1st time round when Soul Sam was DJ'ing a on Friday Night (all evening) for Tony Petherbridge !!!, Derm, Jackie & Karen (Wolverhampton) recently met them at Lea Hall , I know a lot of faces but names always elude me. I currently live just outside Eccleshall and hope to see you around, if you know me just say hello. Best David
M12 OKEH Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Hi Spook, Think I remember chatting to you when you were running a night at The Wayfarer, Stone - must be 10 years plus ago. Where are you outside Eccy? I'm @ Fairoak, just off the Loggerheads Rd. Guess you've got an Audi TT - have to come and have a play with my motor.
Spook Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Hi M12 OKEH, I think we (Moz, Nigel Bown & Myself) had only about 6 or 7 nights at the Wayfarer, It was just to test the water like the couple we did in Stafford and Keys Park, It was during the period where the AQUA (Cannock) was a last Friday of the month event. I am pretty useless at names but I can recall faces & record labels quite well, so if we have met before 'hello again'. Yep my current car is an 'S' Roadster and I actually live In Loggerheads I put "just outside Eccleshall" as I made an assumption that people from Telford would know that that was. Best David
Guest soulfulrosa Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 i remember getting my first record lists from Telford i was just 15! who where they!! cant remember. When you say old HOW old?? We used to buy our vinyl in Wellington Telford circa 1966 !! a liitle record shop in New Street
Tivoli Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 When you say old HOW old?? We used to buy our vinyl in Wellington Telford circa 1966 !! a liitle record shop in New Street Is this the same one that I remember being in a side street, Bell Street I think? Tiv, Keep the Faith and Keep On Keeping On.
Spook Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Yes Tiv, It was in Bell Street and it had two entrances, one in Bell St and I don't know the name of the other street. Only one problem I can remember is they used to put for sale 45's in the window (some got very faded). Then in the early 70's ADC ( Addison Dean & Cox) Solid Gold / Cloud 9 opened a record shop around the corner in Tan Bank. I can remember buying Love on A Mountain Top (rising sons) and the Right Track (Okeh) from there. Last time I was in Wellington it was a shop selling light fittings (about 5 years ago)!! Best Spook
Moxey25 Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 86 club all so did terace lodge at dawley
Guest CarlosFandango Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Swancote/Shifnal both start with an S So does Face!(off mine) far away times, frequent fun, forgot the right name(all start with F)if you get what i mean One thing for sure we had some cracking times in the area ,just after Stafford shut if i remember rightly(this time) Always recall esher one night playing Joe Cocker-Unchain my heart. The attendences at the time chocker Wolvo crowd,Reddittch girls,Gloucester/Cheltenham South Wales probably a few locals as well! Steve Hiya Steve I'm the one of 'locals' & just to name a few that some may remember on here from Bridgnorth .. Simon Howley & his Brother Fred ( now dead unfortunately ), Les Jones, Barry Wilmore, Bickle & does anyone remember Meady ? 86 Club .. Crackin' nights & really good memories but actually started at Worfield Village Hall just a couple of miles down the road ( great liitle venue with great wooden dance floor & a balcony ! ) Can't remember why it had to move but it worked out well for Esher anyway. Don't mention the 'Redditch Girls' I ended up marrying one after meeting her there !! I have a flyer somewhere with my wife ( Nesta ) on the front that I will attach as soon as I find it, the other flyer on here has a photo of Nesta's best friend Lanie ( she's the one in the white suit ) I live in Bridgnorth , always have & was never a fan of Soul Nights too close to home but the 86 was a absolute must, I had a 1st floor flat in Low town, Bridgnorth at the time just a couple of minutes away that my now wife Nesta used to invite every man & his dog too once the 86 finished, people used to queue to get in ... Honestly ! ( you may have been one of them Steve, everyone was welcome ) names include :- Dennis & Julie Lee ( Cheltenham ) Jethro, Soulie, The curly haired Twins ( could never remember their names ) Chiddy , Don Forbes & Caddy from Shrewsbury to name but a few Eshers still about & lives in Broseley now but not too steady on his legs these days & I remember reminissing with him about 'the good ole days' at the 86 & playing the old 86 sounds shortly before him having to move abroad in a hurry ( don't ask ) I tried to retrieve his record collection when he left a bit sharpish but the Landlord got wind of how much it was worth & I believe sold them all on Ebay ... Tragic Like I said Great memories and it really nice to see theres still some of us left in Shropshire still going !... I'll dig out a few old photos from the 86 & bang them on here soon. Cheers Carl
Tivoli Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 86 club all so did terace lodge at dawley Yep that's where i broke my arm!!
Tivoli Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Yes Tiv, It was in Bell Street and it had two entrances, one in Bell St and I don't know the name of the other street. I can remember buying Love on A Mountain Top (rising sons) and the Right Track (Okeh) from there. Best Spook I remember buying Gene Latter's "sign on the dotted line" from the Bell Street shop & buying some records at ADC before buying direct from "Record Corner" in London. Still have an "ADC" record bag in my collection!!! I know the Cloud Nine set up had some quality British soul singles. Can't remember which way round they were but one collected doubles - demo & issue copy of each record. Did he live in Dawley? When Cloud Nine broke up there was a sale of records at an house in Donnington. Dottie Cambridge "Cry your eyes out" went from there. I don't remember a connection with Paul Cowdrey's "Solid Gold" set up. Paul ran Peartree Promotions entertainments agency from Shrewsbury; From which most of the main Shropshire DJ's at the time gained bookings. I think Pete Smith was the exception to this. Anybody remember two soul girls from Wellington circa 70/74 - Kathy & Lorraine?? Tiv, "Keep the faith & keep on keeping on"

Best Spook It was called Langland Records
Missing Link Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 It was called Langland Records Langland Records was in Bell Street opposite the Music Shop and only shut down a couple of years ago. It specialised latterly in rock records. The shop now sells crafts. I only moved to Telford in 1982 but as I recall it only had one entrance then and was quite small.

The other entrance to the older shop was in Crown Street so you could go out either side. This is now a Hope House Hospice charity shop and the newer Langlands is now 'To Let' or it was a week ago.
