Nice tune, and alot stronger than the vocal version IMO. If you get yourself to the Rugby allnighter in a couple of weeks it'll be in my playbox if you feel like making a request... thumbsup.gif

Are you saying that the Nate Adams acetate you have is an instrumental of "Yes You Did" James? Is there a Nate Adams vocal of this lurking somewhere?

Producer Johnny Brantley had a mini-career in wiping vocals from many of his mid-60s soul productions and marketing them as bogus Jimi Hendrix unreleased tracks, whether they actually featured Hendrix or not. The Nate Adams is listed below in an entry from the Early Hendrix website dealing with the fake Hendrix / Brantley masters:

Nate Adams recorded in New Jersey on the 20th of October 1967. The full session included (with Atlantic master number listed first):

13341 Yes You Did

13342 I'm Gonna Be Good*

13343 Why Is It Taking So Long*

13344 A Fool For You

13345 Sophisticated Alabama Soup Bone

* These tracks released as Atlantic 45-2466

Also, there is the old chestnut of the Nate Adams vocal to "Love Slipped Through My Fingers" (to my ears the very best version): existing on an Atlantic acetate, played by Searling at the Casino covered as Hermon Hitson. I've heard a deejay from Louth play this out on occasion and wonder if there are multiple copies of this acetate or whether it is a one-off.

I know Colin Dilnot has done a good deal of research into the very tangled web that is the career of Johnny Brantley and his apparently bewildering interactions with The Ohio Players, Lee Moses, Sam Williams, Hermon Hitson, Nate Adams, Gloria "Towanda" Barnes, Jimmy Norman etc. Perhaps he can shed some light on all of this.

Hi Gareth, yes it's an instrumental of the vocal version by Herman Hitson, but it still has the backing singers who pop up in the second half with a couple of punchy "yes you did it" 's. It's an original acetate in pretty amazing condition, and I am led to believe by more knowledgeable people than myself that it is a one off.

Apart from that I can't shed any more light on the situation, other than it's a rather fine dancer that deserves a bit of exposure...

It's certainly a good dancer, and it's always nice to get those sort of requests while DJing!

It's hard to put a price on a one off that you don't want to sell, and I certainly wouldn't let it go easily. I'd guess that it would have to be well into four figures though if it ever did leave my play box.

Thanks for posting this Pete, great stuff. Can anyone put up the real Hermon Hitson version of Love Slipped Through My Fingers as issued on the HH compilation last year? A bit lo-fi and slightly shambolic but extremely powerful nonetheless.

Searling played this instrumental version out at some time in distant past too did he not Gareth?

James Not sure how you could ever say that is better than the vocal in any soul world, sorry, but I do like the inst version in its own right.

Re the Herman Hitson LSTMF, I have the CD but not sure how to get a CD track to MP3 and on here, Pete any tips?

I tried yesterday burning via WMP and then importing to Audacity as Raw Data and then exporting as MP3 but they didnt seem to work, is there an easier way to burn from CD to MP3 format (PM if people are bored of the repeated question!!)

I've been told that Searling played it at some point. Although I'm far from being an aurthority on the scene history of records, so I'm not the best person to confirm this.

I do know what makes good dance tunes though and IMO the vocal version is a bit messy and lacks the punch that the better produced instrumental has. "Better" is obviously subjective, but as a DJ I want to fill dance floors (*) and if I had to choose between the vocal and the instrumental I would choose the instrumental of this track every time. So for me it is "better".

(*)But ignoring the 'sheep' who only dance to records they know, of course :)

Cant disagree with your logic there, particularly your *, of which I am not just in case you were wondering. And as I say I like the instr in its own right.

I think I like messy records, and especially the horn intro (is that on the instr?, years since I heard it), as I am a messy dancer they arent too great a challenge !

Just listening to CD with the vocal on repeat here and forgot how great a singer he is, what a growler, and what bongos on YYD! Amazing piece of music, Now on track Bad Girl, f**K I have this on 45 and dont remember it sounding this good!! Apologies for hikacking the thread, think I need to post on this CD separately as its awesome!!

Last question honest, how much does vocal on Minit of YYD go for, never seemed to go up much in price, could be tempted at right price!!

Cheers

Jock

PS James 3rd time I agreed with you recently, may have to reply to your PM on RSF of a year ago and say I was wrong, f**k that would hurt :)

Very easy. Rip it using windows media player but in settings, get it to rip as an MP3 not a WM file. Basically thats it, though I reduce the size drastically using the brilliant Acoustica MP3 to Wav converter (free download)
