I would like to throw this open to all and sundry, I organise a soul night in Kent an even when it was just a great idea in my beer glass, I always wanted to be able to have commemorative giveaways at certain times, i.e. first night button badges were given out free on the door and not since. Not rocket science I know but good PR.

Anyway for the first anniversary I wanted to get a record pressed up, this is in September, but I wanted to ask peoples advice/opinions on it as I know some would see it as bootlegging.

So any advice and or opinions greatly recieved from all comers.

many thanks Mark.

Mark, as long as you source who owns the licence for the recorded work i.e. who owns the publishing and go through the correct channel's and pay the dues where they are due then you should not have a problem, someone like Ady Croasdell i'm sure would point you in the right direction or you can take the easy less popular route which has been a regular topic on here...lol

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Mark, the first thing you'd need to do is talk a record company into letting you do it by explaining why it's worth their while to give you something for nothing. In Kent's case it's for publicity for tracks from current or future CDs. In many cases we own the recordings but sometimes other label owners let us do it as the anniversary singles are so prestigous nowadays that they are happy to be associated with them.

Itll be hard for you to convince a company that your single will mprove their sales. Some companies may do it for a flat royalty fee that theyll share out with artists etc but that would cost a fair bit. good luck.

I emailed Mike in September Last year regarding some homework I'd done in respect of my own soul night. I'll share it with you as I don't think it was ever conveyed

Might be of interest to other members needing to ensure the licensing is in place for a give-away promotion. You might like to pop that up as a News article being a cheap option should the venue you promote require such exoneration from copywrite laws for the production of a hard copy of music etc.

At only 5p per track per give-away CD it's an affordable solution. The venue I've secured for my new venture requires such a license which led me to make my enquiries to the MCPS.

Ady, many thanks for that I will now put my thinking hat on, to put together a draft proposal idea before going further. Cheers Mark.

But that's only for the publishing of the song for the songwriters, you'd still need to get the label owners permission for the music and artists and do a deal or you'd still be technically bootlegging!

I see! When I was looking to produce a give-away for my new soul night I made enquiries to cd production companies, only one of which insisted that I had the correct licence and forwarded me to www.mcps.co.uk. The cd company said providing I had that licence I would be ok. Just goes to show doesn't it. I even emailed the mcps to enquire about prices for producing a 10 track cd of 60's recordings and they replied:

This kind of product is licensed under the SG3 Premium Licence. The cost of this is usually 5p per track per copy. Please find attached information relating to this scheme.

Please complete the Information Supply Form, and return it to applications@mcps.co.uk

Please note that no licence, whether express or implied, shall be taken to have been granted by MCPS, PRS or their members merely by the receipt of this email or the completion of the attached form.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact the Media Licensing Team on 020 8378 7500.

Now, after what you've said Ady, I can see why a lot of people don't bother - trying to track down certain elements that you've stated would be a very long task for those not in the know sad.gif
