BrianB Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Heard this for the first time last night on American Music Makers label. Apparently Sonji is Cassius Clay's first wife, and was released just before he turned muslim. What a record. Is it played out, who has it, who discovered it and how much is it? Wow!
Monique Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 (edited) Have this on a couple of tapes we have had over the years and nearly bought it. Have only heard it out a few times though. I'll have a look later when I've got more time to see who was playing it!! Edited January 25, 2007 by Monique

I think I read somewhere that he also created his own label 'Songee' (named after Sonji) to put out 'I Can't Wait (Until I See My Baby's Face) because he couldn't get any label interest. Amazing voice. Any chance of a soundclip, Mr B? Cheers, Jamie

Dave Moore Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 ICWUISMBF - I too really like the Spyder Turner version. recently aquired on an MGM Canadian LP Promo, although if I had to choose a femme version it would be Baby Washington. I think songs of this quality transcend the actual vocalist Quality will out an ' all that. Can't thnk of a bad version of tghis song. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com To my ears, the Sonji Clay version is a country mile ahead. The orchestration combined with her voice make me moist To coin a phrase once used by my MD: "I think we'll have to agree to disagree, but on this occasion, I think you'll find that I'm right" pure poetry! NEV Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I Cant Wait - madeline bell - philips 13881 refosoul YES ITS NOT BAD ,BUT I THINK IT SOUNDS LIKE JUSTINE AND ARETHA VERSIONS AND NOT AS GOOD . THE SONJI IS A STANDALONE . FOR ME IT IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO THE REST AND HAS MANAGED TO PROVIDE A GREAT CROSSOVER STYLE ALL OF ITS OWN! CHEERS NEV
