Somebody asked me yesterday if there any fanzine things at The Torch? Bit before my time. Was there?

Don't remember anything like that, maybe it was all too new then...

The only thing anything like was the reports done in Blues & Soul, and 1 issue was mainly about The Torch, printed either just before or just after the Major Lance Live Recording.

If I think on I'll crawl in the loft and find me battered copy.

Tony that would be GREAT to read. Oldest thing I've got is something called Talk of the North which is from the 70s.

Anyone know what year this fanzine is as it doesn't say. 'Talk of the North' Issue 2. The editor is Pat Brady.

these were done circa 77/78

got all the editions of this mag

gr8 read as were the soultime mags from dave mcadden

Thanks Mark that puts it into perspective. Some of the titles mentioned in Pat's mag have only really been hyped in the last few years. Which is awesome.

Well Jack,whilst I am certainly no expert, and trying very hard not to come across as some pedantic old tw@t

It depends on what you mean by "our scene".

As the Soul scene kicked off in the sixties playing mainly( but not exclusively) UK releases, some obviously more obscure than others, the earliest mag would probably have been Home of the Blues which became Blues & Soul.

In the seventies we got Black Music, Black Echoes,all of which were aimed at a wider market but still had interest for us.

I would suggest that true fanzines had their birth during the mid seventies.

I am sure that there are more knowledgable people on here who could give you more info.

At the time of the Torch, I seem to recall buying Hot, Buttered Soul and Shout, although neither were what you could call totally Northern. They cost around 30p so that would have been 1971-73.

Yeah, that's it Tony. Normally with a B&W photo of an artist or group as the cover. Editor was either Clive Richardson or Chris Savoury.
