KevH Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 hi ,just heard "Tears dry on their own",from the cd. Absolutely love it!!!. When i hear a tune ,i always go thru the "what if's". What if it had just been discovered... What if it was dog rare..... What if it was recorded in the early seventies....then what?,,KEV.

Guest 71TRSC Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 (edited) A word of warning, "Frank", the first album is rather different to "Back to Black" If you are a soul fundamentalist of the bring me the head of Frank Popp type you wont like Frank. It will have you frothing at the mouth in a rage of righteous indignation. Frank has a some nice tracks on it and her influences at the time were more Jazzy and it is more a contemporary sound. Stand up track for me was "in my bed". Its not a bad album if you are open minded on your music but its not "retro" like back to black. Edited January 22, 2007 by 71TRSC

Guest Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Because everyone raved about her I had a listen.... for me it's not something I liked really. Almost betwixt blues and ska? Quite quirky in the delivery of the vocals but it didn't come across as natural. And her hair! It's like tumbleweed LOL My Husband just said she has a very soulful delivery! Huh!! He hates soul LOL... but he did say that she does very weird things with her legs haha.

Sunnysoul Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 (edited) Amy bloomin Wineface. i started a thread up last week about CDs with proper soul on it got about two replies...............PAH Don't worry Baz, I'm with you all the way on this ! Of course she IS a rather good POP artiste though, but I emphasise the word POP here ... I mean , by all means lump her in the mainstream commercial pop femme category of Madonna Gwen Stefani Pink etc etc she's no different to them ... ... but really, anyone who thinks Amy is "soulful", well they haven't really heard the likes of Betty Harris Doris Duke Etta James Anne Bennett Nesby ad infinitum have they ? Next subject please ! Edited January 23, 2007 by sunnysoul

Next subject please ! hi, yes i've heard BETTY HARRIS etc,and they are the epitome of soulfulness, but AMY'S not bad at all. i think she has a lot more to offer than Madonna,Gwen Stefani,Pink. Is it cos AW is new on the block? Don't forget people like Linda Jones were "new" once!!!

Is it cos AW is new on the block? Don't forget people like Linda Jones were "new" once!!! I think AW is okay, good enough not to be compared with Pink and Gwen Stefani for gawds sake! I sometimes think that some people will not even entertain any other form of music that is not sixties Northern Soul and I do think that is a bit blinkered. I know this is a soul forum but I think you can class AW as definitely Soul influenced and no different than white artists of the past that have taken inspiration from Black American singers.
sister dawn Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Thought the beginning was a bit but when it gets going it's a superb track, no doubt. Still think Rehab kicks it's arse though. Amy Winehouse or Janice from friends track cut from ain't no mountain high enough.

I actually quite like it, when I first heard re-hab I thought it was quite soulful, but after hearing it a few times decided it wasn't and that she was singing in an affected voice. Decent music for the charts though Winnie:-)

KevH Posted January 23, 2007 Author Posted January 23, 2007 Amy Winehouse or Janice from friends track cut from ain't no mountain high enough. yeah, little bit of motown, little bit of Curtis Mayfield(the king), can't be a bad thing,,,,,,can it?

Guest Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 (edited) Amy whitehouse..........Incognito....Sounds of Blackness.......Brand new heavies...........frank popp........etc..........all good modern renditions of authentic style .......all good.....and enjoyed by myself then and now But give me a 6ts Mike Terry thumping Detroit Saxaphone break product anytime baby! Billy Freemantle Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Must be one of ther most interesting voices in ages. Brilliant to be able to like something produced now and not 40 years ago.

Pete S Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 ... but really, anyone who thinks Amy is "soulful", well they haven't really heard the likes of Betty Harris Doris Duke Etta James Anne Bennett Nesby ad infinitum have they ? Yes a thousand times, f*cking boring now, time for something different, don't tell me, she's white and Jewish so under Soul Police laws she can't have any soul whatsoever so she's rubbish. Listen to the album, it's excellent, the first album was great as well. Joss Stone's soul sessions album was also excellent, you people are such snobs.
Harrogatesoul Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 And I agree wholeheartedly with you Pete! It's just bloody great to know that there are some people out there putting out some decent contempory music - Joss Stone - I think the first album is a minor british classic. Who else has worked with Betty Wright and Little Beaver from the UK in the last god knows how many years. As for Miss Winehouse - again, its just great to see someone doing this stuff - If we support it I hope it would give them the impetus to carry on. Lewis Taylor anyone???? Rich
manus Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 (edited) Yep, my son brought me CD for xmas and its great! My son bought this for me for xmas too and I really like it. As to the argument corncerning if it's Soul or not the voice certainly sounds a lot more soulful to my ears than on some of the pop stompers I heard played out and about under the guise of Northern Soul. All the best Manus Edited January 24, 2007 by manus
Guest Dan Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 to be honest, who gives a f*** if it's soul or not, it sounds good so enjoy it. i've been listening to a lot of crosby stills and nash lately, and a lot of neil young. absolutely brilliant. not as good as the best soul, nothing is, but better than a lot of the worst. cue the usual 'i'm a bigger soulie than you' suspects... oh there's far too much soul in the world, i don't have time to listen to anything else/eat/sleep/leave my shack deep in the woods

Did you see the Neil Young film that came out recently? I've got it but not watched it yet, reason I bought it, I'm not keen on his voice but I heard it being reviewed and the guy said basically - if you're not a fan, if you've never been a fan and think he can't sing, after you watch this film you'll be not only a fan but an admirer of the man as well. Now there's a challenge.

Guest rachel Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 bearsy - you got me. where are the moderators when you need them Hiding I guess that something that some people find soulful can therefore be discussed in this section, even the discussion of whether it's soulful or not. Personally, I don't really like her voice but think the tunes/ arrangements are alright and can see the motowny-type influence. I've read a couple of interviews with her and she didn't seem entirely sure what her influences were herself, she seemed to think that Spector girl groups and soul were the same thing. I have heard a couple of her tracks played at a soul night (not 'Rehab', can't remember which ones) and while I'm not (or should I say I'm no longer... ) blinkered against anything past the 70s, I didn't think the sound fitted in with what else was being played.
Stevie T Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Yep, my son brought me CD for xmas and its great! yep! my son did the same,i like her ,nice and refreshing form all the drivel out there..!! would have to lazer her tats of before i would let her sleep with me and would i dance to Rehab ???...you bet your ass i would

Well now, if it's confession time then can i just add that recently i have been finding myself enjoying more and more the music of a certain Tim Hardin! Don't blame me, blame the Four Tops for covering "If i was a carpenter" Yours, Worried of Watford.

Rich Umm, no, Lewis Taylor 'no-one' I'd say Like Aimless Shirehorse very much (sorry couldn't resist!), don't want to read or write about her on here (well, any more I have already done here!) though, as she does all right for good press without S/Source's help and that's kind of the way it should be, really. If people think she's a great new soul voice, that's fine too. Better they think that than going out and buying a Pussycat Dolls CD I guess... TONE
