Online DJs

A fair bit of this going on at the moment and seen reference made to it in one or two posts in other threads.

Watched one or two "DJ's" and must admit to wondering whether they've ever ventured out into the real world to see how it's properly done, but in fairness they have been in the minority. Also, nobody in their 50's 60's should be inflicting 'Dad dancing' on their audience..

On the upside, I have really enjoyed those who have taken the opportunity to mix tempos and play some good quality slower tunes which would never get played at the sort of nights I enjoy, and being surprised by people I've known for years displaying a breadth to their collections that I never knew existed. I guess we've all got them, just never had a chance to play them..

PS I am aware of chill out sessions but have never been to one

It’s been part education part excruciating imho . Heard sone fabulous sets from well respected people but there’s something very boring about the whole malarkey , mainly lack of social contact real contact not online contact . 
I don’t like looking at the same face for over 5 minutes and unless Magot Robbie or Jennifer Lawrence get into playing Rare soul online do not intend to again . I prefer to listen later on Mixcloud if possible . Good topic to discuss !

On line DJ,s at BVAN ( Bury virtual all nighter  ) have been fantastic , the music has and is as good as I have heard anywhere country wide over many years at real nighters,  yes we,re all missing the face to face contact,  conversation and interaction but until this shit is under control its all we have. This isn't Video / fb/  instragm but a social interaction via a chatroom.  From a personal point of view as a still active member of the nighter scene its a  fantastic escape

Bury is the only one I will  get involved with.  
I have no interest whatsoever in doing a live stream and most I’ve heard the sound quality is piss poor.

The internet is full of stuff so no need to spend time with virtual djs not up to scratch, just as with events in "real life" . The Bury Virtual All Nighter has been fantastic and a very expensive education for me so far - in these times it has been a highlight of the month (formerly the week). When these things are done well they really lift the spirit. And I think with Bury especially we might have stumbled on a format worth keeping once this is all over.

Simon (Ingham) was quick off the blocks ref 'The Bury Virtual All-nighters'.  He thought of it whilst walking his dog, and rang to bounce the idea off me.  At that time I was still in shock at what had happened all around, and was about to furlough my two staff, so although I said I thought it was a great idea, I really meant I thought it was a great idea to those people that still 'live and breath' the soul scene.  But deep down, thinking it wasn't really for me (Simon new that)

It took me a couple of weeks to 'get in the zone', but I played for Simon on the show, and doing so turned out to be enjoyable albiet very strange pre-recording a spot - Especially any speaking parts (Believe it or not) 

Of course it's not ideal when comparing it to live events, but this Bury experience has turned out to be enjoyable for lots of people, enabling us to keep in touch through our music, plus the live chat room and the Soul-source thread when the show gets played of a Sat night have been a great laugh.

They did an all request All-dayer where the listeners chose the tunes - Again, I thought Mmmmm, it could work, thinking I would most probably dip in and out throughout the day, but the sounds drew me in, and I listened to the whole show. Being a radio show has enabled more different tunes to be aired than at a live event, and people are more focussed on said tunes because they have no one to talk to (Most now not speaking to their husbands or wives by now) 

Take these things for what they are - It's all we have, so embrace them, and appreciatte the amount of work some people put in to them (Hours of prep work for each show)

To be honest there's no excuse for piss poor sound on a livestream, it's cheap and easy to hook up a mixer to your laptop or phone for optimum sound quality. Plus people should be at least testing their output before the go live just like they would in a "normal" club setting.

It sounds like the DJ's or whoever have decided to use the same / similar equipment on the net as some of the events I used to go to......most of them were poor, which is why I stopped going. Pathetic

I saw quite a bit of negativity when the Bury VAN and other live streams started, then the very same people saw it as alright when they decided the to dip their toes and it became obvious the pandemic was here for a good while longer.

My personal opinion is live stream ie in someone's bedroom/kitchen looks naff and the constant walking over to check the video is working doesn't help!

The bonus of being able to programme tracks that don't normally get airtime(no pressure to please the dancefloor) has allowed the introduction of lesser played tracks and I hope broadened a few horizons and maybe freshen up the playlists when venues "go live" again. I agree no excuse for poor sound quality!

Really enjoyed Shoebox Soul (Keith Whitson) live though at the weekend.

Ideal opportunity to play underplayed tunes and Keith did.

If I wasn’t technophobial I would do Shelves of Soul featuring boxes and crates.

Loads of underplayed Soul out there.

I’ve not really watched much, 60’s rhythm and soul, Steve green, and stand out for me David Ripolles, great tunes great delivery , I appreciate the scene is in a lockdown , and there are some very good djs out there, who want to share the love, but I don’t want friends invites on Facebook just to promote their own night, that gets an instant , remove, from me , I’ll make my own mind up ta

Hearing people with good taste playing stuff they wouldn't normally play is what's clinched it for me. Not seen many kitchens thank goodness.. more like opulence itself - entire rooms given over to decks, mixers, records, posters etc. Would leave me looking like the poor relation if I did it
