Len Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Jimmy Burns defo / The Brand New Faces last (Never liked that me) Len
Amsterdam Russ Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Jimmy Burns and Bobby James are, in many respects, the same song - same backing track and almost identical vocal treatment. The Brand New Faces isn't really a 'version'. It just utilises the melody. The Mystics, on the other hand, is a completely different arrangement but with the original lyrics. In fact, you need reminding that it is a version of the Jimmy Burns song. Listening to all four back-to-back, I have to say The Mystics sounds fresh and exciting and thus it gets my vote.
Dylan Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Jimmy burns sounds the more polished to me but I like bobby James just as much. Nothing in it for me with these two. brand new faces is terrible 1
Westender Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Bobby James, just, over Jimmy Burns. Just like the slight rasp in the voice even though the Burns track is a slightly cleaner production. The other 2 are some way behind.
Soul Shrews Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Must admit thats the 1st time I've heard The Mystics and as Amsterdam Russ says it does sound fresh and exciting. However I can remember Jimmy Burns as a fresh exciting tune for Richard Searling late 70s early 80s so Mr Burns will get my vote. Seem to remember @ that time the only DJs playing Brand New Faces were those who didn't have Jimmy Burns. I quite liked its quirkiness then. Will give it a listen as not heard it since but Jimmy Burns for me Cheers Paul
Twinroots Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Bobby james for me...jimmy burns..brand new faces then mystics
Zoomsoulblue Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Jimmy Burns - Soul Sam 77 St Ives - smashed, biting my bottom lip, mouth dry but no time for a drink as the next sound is on - keep on dancing - great times great memories
Ficklefingers Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 It's Jimmy Burns for me - only just outshining Bobby James.. But in saying that, it's ONLY because it was Jimmy's cut I first heard and therefore associate the track more with his version As Russ quite rightly states, The Mystics take could quite easily be mistaken for an entirely different track altogether.. But I too really like the arrangement, which appeals to me due to sounding 'fresh' Brand New Who ???? 1
Jumpinjoan Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Jimmy for sure. Bobby James is a great vocal but his grunting and straining puts him second. Would still get me up clicking my heels though. BNF is quirky which I do like. Mystics does absolutely nothing for me, never has, complete pants x
Martyn Pitt Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Jimmy Burns first, it has the edge and rawness that Bobby James doesn't, to my ears. I have always liked the Brand New Faces but either theirs or Jimmy's version would keep me on the dance floor. The other one as Joan eloquently puts it is complete pants.
Soulandy Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Got to be Jimmy Burns but only just ahead of Bobby James. The other two doesn't really do it for me
Jules Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 the bobby james version sounds like it was recorded with a duffle coat over the mic
Soul-slider Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Jimmy Burns, the first version I heard. It's strange but most people do tend to go for the first version of anything they hear. Bought the Mystics but it doesn't really go anywhere so I traded it.
Mark B Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 jimmy burns same as Jules bobby James sounds lofi not enough punch
Ted Massey Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 You get the instrumental on Bobby James just saying Bobby James is in the play box, Jimmy on the shelves Brand new faces in the bin 2
Dobber Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Jimmy burns all day long, it’s got that hands down northern soul impact! All the rest are neither here nor there, and the jimmy burns for collectibility too! i dont actually know...which is the first original version?
Tomangoes Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Always puzzles me when 4 artists make a version of a song and they all bomb. Jimmy for me. Has it all. Ed
Dylan Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Out of jimmy burns and bobby James which is the rarest ?
El Corol Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I used to like Jimmy Burns version, but to be honest they all sound so so to me these days.
Geoff Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 After listening to all four versions I pick the Mystics. Jimmy Burns and Bobby James are both good but interchangeable if I heard them out. The Mystics give it a different feel. The Brand New Faces would be okay if I hadn't heard the others. All a matter of personal taste.
Mike Posted September 12, 2020 Author Posted September 12, 2020 last view days Jimmy got things wrapped up then ?
Hooker1951 Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 Jimmy burns for me but bobby James version is pretty close 2nd ML
