So, a few days ago I ventured out to one of the local charity shops that had just re-opened after lockdown. Wasn't expecting to find anything of interest but I did pick up the ABC Northern compilation 'Out On The Streets Again' (ABCLP 5192) 1976 for £1.00

I've just played side one and was surprised to hear an alternate version of Jackie Lee's 'Darkest Days'! I have the original ABC US 45. On this particular LP it contains some brass (trumpet?) right at the start, you know the guitar and percussion bit that kicks the tune off, the brass is intertwined in-between. It's not on the US 45 or the Kent LP 'Floorshakers'.

Anyone else noticed this? £1 well spent, just for that track!

  • Yep, been around a while that album but you're spot on, I've never come across it on any format, not even via the old tape swapping!.. Bizzarre.

I've found this a few times recently I found a UK chess demo of Fontella Bass Rescue me which has no backing vocals dated 1969

I have an acetate from bob relfs estate that is a different take. I’d love to hear this version mentioned and compare them.

I'll do a WAV file sometime this week and e-mail it to you if you like? Not aloud to upload files on here unless they are on youtube.
