Guest the dukester Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 THIS SIDE PLAYED ON SATURDAY....... SPARKED A CONVERSATION ON WHAT HAPPENED TO HER.......... I COULDNT BELIEVE THE ANSWERS!!!! CHECKED IT OUT AND ITS TRUE................ During a second Memphis session that spring, Lyndell, Crawford, and the Stax house band essentially improvised "What a Man" in just two takes. The single went on to reach the number 50 spot on the Billboard pop charts, but the increased visibility also called attention to the fact that Lyndell was a white woman singing black music, triggering threats from the Ku Klux Klan and other racist factions. In response she retired from performing and returned to Gainesville, living the next quarter century in seclusion. RACIST SCUM
Godzilla Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I didn't even realise she was white. Looks like she eventually started singing again though: Two singles for Stax/Volt, produced by Dave Crawford, that's all she cut before retiring from performing, some say under threat of the Ku Klux Klan. Was convinced to resume her career at the opening of the Stax Museum in Memphis in May 2003. I guess that's where the second pic is from. Only two singles though. Scandalous. What a waste of an amazing talent. Totally agree with your sentiments Dukesy. Godz
