Can anyone give me info on one of my 'still' fave tracks, The Silhouettes-Not Me baby. It was pretty much only heard by me and mates at the Casino, and also pretty much not heard at all these days. What label and price would it be these days. Whenever I ask local DJ's if they can give it a spin, I just get blank looks or rueful shakes of the head.

I had that album and it didn't have any give-away.

Now I feel cheated... 🙂

Normally the 45 was removed as it is such a big ticket item. The only way is to buy one sealed, unless you are lucky and it is still sat inside waiting to be loved

Big record early days of WC - always used to have a cassette recorder in my bag on the stage and this appeared on a lot of tapes! Style pretty much defined Northern Soul for me during those times.

Hi,

Little bit of Northern Soul folklore here - I cannot remember the exact date - but 73/74 - I was at VaVa Friday night all-nighter sitting chewing the fat with Colin Curtis and the sound came on - both rendered speechless and got up to peer over side down onto the decks - Blue / green label with what appeared to be randon small red stickers to disguise and cover-up. FFS - best sound I've ever heard  (usual response every week to another killer unknown) - no idea whether it was Dj's or another classic - 'here give this a spin, you won't believe how good this is' - cover-up lend for that moment. I remember Soul Bowl listing this early January 1975 - £5 - I was trying to get thru' on phone all day, failing to do so - My brother and I have had quite a few - I think he's still got one - must give him a call.

So on the basis it was covered up and Colin and I had never heard it before I'd say this was one of it's very first airings - anybody remember this occassion.

Look forward to further info

Yea - already posted that write up as it’s a great account .

And a real nice story Steve of how and when this got played ... and Stevie , I was the same as you in getting a recording of this by taking a cassette to the casino ... until I could buy the boot ...

The record has been played pretty much constantly throughout my time and its massive again these days.

It's really interesting to see that Not Me Baby got airplay in a major centre like New Jersey.

It begs a couple of questions: why would a radio station like WAAT play a tune that was ONLY available on an LP, or as a 7" single enclosed only with the LP ?

And so, is it another urban (northern soul) myth that the 7 " single of Not Me Baby never got a commercial release outside of the LP ?

Sure, time has shown that the seven of Not Me Baby isn't a commonly found record but there have been numerous northern "rarities" over the years that did get some sort of commercial release, albeit limited.

I could see it getting airplay in Philadelphia (their hometown) but I agree it is strange to have an

album cut getting airplay on a Pop station in Trenton, New Jersey.

Another question is what in the world is the "Mo Beat" or "Soul-Mo-beat" in the liner notes ??-

I suppose it's possible that the company rep might have given the LP to the radio station / DJ and said "there is a single in it you might want to play"

To all who replied, a big thank you. It makes interesting reading for me and it's fantastic to see the photo of the the actual disc. I think that my conclusion would be that it is 'one of those tracks' that takes us back to days past, great days, greater nights at the Casino. Oooh where did it all go, chomping at the bit, dodging cops, all of it.
