Blackpoolsoul Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) I have just noticed (20 minutes) ago on FB that Eugene has passed away Ady Crampton Interviewed him a while back, what an influence on the scene......forever in our thoughts Sir https://www.shinyl.co.uk/eugene-thomas-epitome-of-sound/?fbclid=IwAR1AY3k3ldS2kkyk0A9ABYHDwjvBLAgrfbGoUQUmU02ZzXFPBCBFlQfIySs Edited April 10, 2020 by Blackpoolsoul 1 1
The Yank Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Really sorry to hear this- met him a few years back and he was an incredibly nice guy. Great 2 sided 45 !!
Winsford Soul Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Rest in peace Eugene . Epitome of sound, You don't love me a defining record of our lives. Part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you for the memories
Goldsoul Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 EUGENE ‘Jean Thomas RIP Sadly the legendary lead singer of one the scene’s greatest ever 45’s You Don’t Love Me has passed away. Our thoughts are with his family and group originator Robert Paladino. My journey with ‘Jean’ started in 1974 as one of the original Wigan Casino team, who helped break the phenomenal side on Sandbag. I had the good fortune to meet label owner(Mike Szymanski) and producer Tony Camillo(RIP) before connecting with Robert. Eugene appeared for the first time ever performing the song at SoultripUSA Orlando https://youtu.be/qAL-aggJ2fw Later an appearance at the famous Blackpool Tower performing both sides of his classic in front of 2,500 enthused Jean beyond belief. A truly beautiful man who is loved by not only his family, but the entire Northern Soul collective. Rest In Peace my dear friend. Thanks to Andy Lothian for letting me know. 2
Ian Parker Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) Very sad. if any record had to 'Epitomise' the Northern scene, it has to be 'You don't love me' RIP friend, i'm gonna play your song LOUD ! Edited April 10, 2020 by Ian Parker 1
Mike Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 site note -two topics merged into this one Yet more sad news, RIP Eugene Thomas
Tomangoes Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Very sad news. A record that borders on bringing a tear to your eye...will certainly tonight. More soul than Northern for sure. Number 7 in the Cleveland charts shows there was an appetite for ' our music' out in the states. In his interview above, which is fantastic, including his 2018 single...both sides..highlighted his desire to make more great music. I hope whatever he had in the production line can be shared. RIP Gene. Ed
Godzilla Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Gosh that’s sad. One of the best records this scene ever unearthed. Wonderful that he was recording again too. RIP Eugene
Michael V Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Very sad to hear of Eugene's passing-as the other contributors here have so touchingly put it- 'You Don't Love Me' is a record that so encapsulates the Northern Soul scene -of the past, present and future;played at the first all -nighter I went to in the 80's and the last Soul night I attended in February just before this dreadful virus,it's atmosphere, magic and meaning still there for all of us,no matter how many times we dance to it,so plain to see. I'm glad Eugene got to know how much his record is loved -worldwide. 1
Bruv Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 R.I.P. Eugene, Thank you for your massive contribution to the Northern Soul Scene with your Vocals on You Don't Love Me a song that I loved from the moment I first heard it, and in recent times, Thanks for the chats we had with the pm's on facebook.
Tlscapital Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 And there you were 'hanging in' there (framed) above my head all this time... Thanks and Bless you 'where (ever) were you' Eugene + 1
