In the The Beginning - The Chantlers

Came across a reminder of a tune from years ago which got me thinking and I apologise if this has been covered before (please direct me)

I can' find anything about this group and I started to wonder if they were pre-Harthon and need your help please

The writer was Carl Lanfield (Harthon connection) and the Producer Preston Chapman (Harthon connection)

I did wonder if they were connected to The United Four, but I am normally always wrong

I have done The Discogs stuff

As often is the case...there is a much bigger story here.

Preston Chapman – producer of The Chantlers

Cheslove (Ches-Love ‎– 2070-The Chantlers)

Ruby and The Romantics were appearing at The Stardust Inn, Conchester Hwy/Flower Rd, Chester, PA. on 5th July 1968, Maxine Brown August 3rd, and the group Cheslove Revue on Nov 8th, and then the O-Jays the week after.

In 1970, Preston L. Chapman was director of the Cheslove Musical Cultivation Studio (CMCS). The ambitions for the studio (which was initially under a program from the difficulties facing the Chester Home Improvement Project (Chips) was intended to create classes for kids to take vocal, instrument and choreography lessons.

CMCS had been at 2330 W. 3rd St, and there had been various programs of cultural, business and industrial initiatives (e.g. ‘Black Table’, United Community Fund, The Wade House, etc) with I guess the ‘inevitable’ fall-outs, budget cuts, and so on.

Maxine Brown’s 3rd Aug 1968 appearance at the Stardust Inn was in fact part of Greater Chester Movement (GCM) project ‘soulsville’ area youth program (nothing to do with Stax or any other soulsville). It was the second event of this type sponsored By the Stardust. The action centre for soulsville area youth program was at 634 Morton Ave. The proposed soulsville Jan 1969 ran for 6 months and a budget of $19,405.

I think it is safe to say Preston Chapman led a colourful life. He was coach of Chester Red Sox semi-pro team in 1971. He stepped into the boxing ring to raise charity funds for the boy scouts back in 1974…and much more.

As for The Chantlers record itself: fascinating that the Ches-Love ‘label graphics’-style & fonts are quite close to another from the area that I wrote about in Northern Connections 20, Ves-Thad 423. https://www.45cat.com/label/vesthadpennsylvania
